Book Reviews of Hope and Help for Your Nerves (Signet)Book Review: This book turned my brother's life around! Summary: 5 Stars
After my brother was diagnosed with the anxiety disease he believed that he would never feel good or happy again and was not even looking forward to the birth of he and his wife's first child. I ordered the book and had it mailed to his home. After reading just a few pages of this book on the day it arrived in the mail, he realized that things would be okay and developed an understanding of this disease and how he could deal and cope with it and live a happy and productive life. He called me the day he began reading the book to tell me how incredibly relieved and at peace he was upon reading the first few pages of Dr. Weekes book and that rather than hide from the facts of his illness he was able to face and understand his condition. I cannot thank Dr. Weekes enough for writing this incredibly helpful and life saving book and encourage anyone that has a family member or close friend suffering from this condition to get this book to them right away!
Book Review: Wonderful! Summary: 5 Stars
Having suffered from anxiety, panic, agoraphobia, and other anxiety-related ailments throughout much of own my life, I found this book to be both an excellent reference and an inspiration. Everything is explained at a comfortable level (in my opinion) and I was able to read through it relatively quickly.
At the height of my treatment, also the peak of my anxiety, I referred to this book almost daily, and it provided me with confidence and relief, mostly as far as my symptoms went. It made me able to say to myself, to this day, when I get an uncomfortable or scary anxiety symptom "It's okay--it's just my anxiety."
And anyone who has experienced anxiety and panic knows that that in and of itself is a breakthrough.
Overall, this book has been a great tool and reference in learning to cope with an rise above my anxiety. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for the same.
Book Review: Way Ahead of it's Time! Summary: 5 Stars
It is amazing to think this book was written in 1969, so current is most of the information and tips on managing anxiety. Every time I read this wonderful book (and I have read it several times), I feel like Claire Weekes herself is sitting with me, patting me on the shoulder, and telling me to relax, there is nothing to worry about.
This is a gentle book. The author seems to understand exactly--and I mean exactly!--the predicament of each reader and does not prescribe unrealistic steps; you move slowly, patiently ("float") towards your goal with no harsh judgment or self-criticism necessary.
Miss Weekes seems to have been a genius at understanding people, really understanding the inner workings of people. It's too bad she is long gone and we are now inundated with hundreds of new titles every year; most bad, unscientific, unrealistic, or simply rehashes of what came before.
Book Review: The Best Book You'll ever read on anxiety Summary: 5 Stars
I have suffered from anxiety for most of my life. For the first time in many years, with the help of this book, I can almost see myself being able to completely recover, something I only hoped for in the past. It has taken me about 2 years of effort, much longer than I had hoped, but I was in pretty bad shape when I started. I had irrational fears, and phobias, and I have managed to elimante one completely, and am making progress in the other areas. The best part about the approach in this book is that it keeps things simple and doesn't exaggerate the anxiety condition into some incurable disease. For instance, I had obsessive-compulsive tendencies. Without drugs or complicated techniques, I have greatly diminished my symptoms in this regard. These tendencies, although hard to change, are really only exaggerated symptoms of anxiety, not some difficult to understand condition.
Book Review: This book saved me Summary: 5 Stars
I read a lot, but have never bothered to write a review before. I had to after reading this book. It really helped me. I've suffered from anxiety for many years, but more recently have suffered from debilitating panic attacks. This approach to accepting the anxiety and panic symptoms is so different from anything I've ever heard or read. So now, instead of fighting the symptoms, I'm allowing them to happen in a "bring it on" sort of way and it's completely changed me. Simply put, the author says your mind will eventually become desensitized to these worries if you do it this way. I know I'm not "cured" yet, but I'm certainly on my way. I really like how she addresses every symptom someone with "nervous illness" may have, so you feel the book was written with you in mind. I've even found myself rereading passages. Overall, Fantastic Book that I feel lucky to have found!
