Book Reviews of Hope and Help for Your Nerves (Signet)Book Review: Saved my life too. Summary: 5 Stars
I came across this book haphazardly as many have. Saw it in a library while looking for another book. Had anxiety since I was 18. Found the book when I was 25. Absolutely changed my life. It is a revelation of the truth about anxiety. Until then, I was in darkness regarding the facts or even that I had an identifiable disorder. From this book, I gleaned courage, hope, comfort, a plan, and I gained an advantage over the ravaging effects of the frightening bogeys of anxiety. It was like finding a piece of gold while looking through the junk drawer. Every anxiety sufferer needs to know what is contained in the books by Dr. Claire Weekes. The wisdom, insight, and truth, that I believe came from God as a way of easing the pain of his creatures is unmatched in any book on the subject I have ever seen.
Book Review: The Best Book for suffers , It has the answers. Summary: 5 Stars
I've suffered from anxiety and panic attacks and agrophobia for over 6 years. I thought I was alone until I found Dr. Claire Weekes book. Her advice and explainations and my hard work led to recovery. I since helped start up and lead a self-help group based on her teachings. I've read many books on this topic and I have found Dr. Claire Weekes to be the absolute BEST. Any question you have, any symptom you experience, she explains. There is a pattern to this illness and she helps you understand this, there is a path into this illness and there is a path out. Many could be spared much suffering if we had been educated along the way about our natural responses to prolonged stress. Dr.Weekes has since passed on but she has left a wonderful gift of freedom to those who follow her advice.
Book Review: She gave a name to my suffering Summary: 5 Stars
I began to have severe agoraphobia in 1974, but I had no clue as to what was happening to me until, by sheer accident, I came across this book. I believe that it was the only book on the subject at that time. I discovered what the name and nature of my disorder was, and that there were a lot of people who had the same problem. Unfortunately, I gave up the struggle in 1975 and did nothing about it until 1992. From then on, I slowly managed to desensitize myself to the world outside of my neighborhood. I can now make trips of hundreds of miles without a reaction. It is my own fault for not trying harder or sooner. This book could have saved me twenty years of suffering if I had only had the guts to try it out. And yes, it does take guts -- a lot of guts and a lot of faith in God.
Book Review: Old, but still the best Summary: 5 Stars
I am a clinical psychologist who has treated many people with panic disorder and agoraphobia. Claire Weekes' books are remarkably helpful. I ask every patient with panic disorder to read this book. It is interesting to me that the book was written before the term "panic disorder" was a common term and the book does not say it is for treatment of "panic." The descriptions of the panic experience are so descriptive, however, that every patient recognizes immediately that Dr. Weekes knows about panic. I have often heard patients say something like "it seemed like she was in my mind and body because she knew just what I was experiencing. The terminology is out of date. However, the wisdom is just as useable now as when the book was written.
Book Review: Now I understand Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book based on its reviews. I was diagnosed with GAD 3 years ago. I completed a trial of antidepressants and have been medication free for a year and five months now. When I experience a life-changing event, my anxiety spirals out of control. This book helped me understand how I was perpetuating my panic attacks by putting myself in a fear-adrenaline-fear cycle. I learned how to stop the cycle by separating myself from the sensations (Face-Accept-Float-Let Time Pass). I learned what it means to accept the sensations and not fight them.
Although the book was written some time ago, the principles it teaches still apply today. This book is a quick read and you can apply the techniques immediately. You can start feeling better today!
