Book Reviews of Hornady Reloading Handbook 7th EditionBook Review: Great source of reloading info and data Summary: 4 Stars
As per Hornady's usual standards this book is a wealth of knowledge and reasonably up to date reloading data.
My last Hornady manual was a 2 volume set with one volume being ballistics tables. This volume is a single book with no ballistic information. Ballistic information, however, is available on the Hornady web site. This defeats the purpose of buying a printed book but does keep the price down so overall it seems to be a fair trade.
There are a lot of new loads in this book. Some new cartridges can be found here as well.
One draw back to printed manuals is the inability to immediately stay abreast of the latest happenings. Since this book was printed there has been many new powders, bullets and even cartridges that have come out that will not appear in print until the next version comes out.
Drawbacks aside, Hornady provides, in addition to reloading data, excellent information on hand loading metallic cartridges.
Overall a great book and one that deserves to be in the library of all reloaders.
Book Review: Good manual Summary: 5 Stars
There is a lot of information here for experienced and newbie alike, including an entire section on reloading basics. It even covers a few obsolete cartridges, such as 6.5x54mm Mannlicher-Schoenauer. The loads listed use only Hornady bullets, of course. Whatever products you prefer, it is almost a requirement to have both the bullet manufacturer's and the powder manufacturer's loading data. Since the company's research is focused on their product, in this case Hornady bullets, the manual covers powders from several different manufacturers, using a specific bullet. I have other manuals (from companies which don't make bullets) which provide only the bullet weight for each given load. This could get the new handloader into trouble, as bullets with the same weight, but differing in other areas, such as length or profile, can generate different maximum pressures with the same load. If you are going to use Hornady bullets, you should have the Hornady manual.
Book Review: Invaluable tool for handloaders Summary: 5 Stars
Whether you are new to handloading or have 40 years of experience under your belt like I do, the latest Hornady Reloading Manual is a must have, invaluable tool.
It covers the latest cartridges, the latest powders, and the latest ballistic data. Of course, all loads featured use Hornady bullets. That is, after all, their forte. Particularly useful is the section on loading for the M1 Garand semiauto rifle of World War II fame. The Garand is rugged and reliable as rock, but the gas operated action requires that powders and bullet weights be within certain parameters to avoid damage to the rifle or shooter. This information will go a long way to keep those old warhorses functional.
I highly recommend this manual to anyone interested in the shooting sports. It is worth every penny.
Book Review: A Great Reloading Book Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great book. Being a novice and having a history of buying every reoloading book old and new I can get my hands on I feel that this selection is a good purchase. If you buy their bullets then this is the book you must have on your shelf. I found it full of suggestions and descriptions that others brush over. Yes, they only mention Hornady products but if I manufactured some of the finest bullets on the planet then why even hint there is another reoloading world out there. The first book I picked up was a Lee modern reloading second edition along with a used 83 NRA reloading manual - two of the best ever written. When your safety is at stake you better read them all and the Hornady 7th Edition is pretty darn good.
Book Review: A Must Have Book For Reloaders Summary: 5 Stars
If you do any serious reloading for precision target shooting, hunting or just good old fashioned plinking, this is the book to have. Easy to read and understand, this is a must for the shooter out there that wants accurate information including work-up loads for any cartridge that suits your shooting style. A brief history of each caliber is included to aquaint the reader and this in itself is very informative. A great deal of work went into this and other Hornady publications and I would not attempt a new reload unless I had this book for reference. Greatly expanded since my first purchase back in '76. Well worth the money to have on your bookshelf. Free shipping doesn't hurt either.
