Book Reviews of Hour GameBook Review: Fun Serial Killer Read, but Don't Expect the Usual. Summary: 3 Stars
Three stars because I had fun listening to the audio version of this particular Baldacci outing, but I knew who the killer was almost 1/4 of the way through the read. In fact, it was disappointingly obvious, and I kept thinking, oh no, Dave, don't do this to your fans! The real surprise of the story? Discovering who the copycat killer was. Fun stereotypical rich family you love to hate and sadistic humor of the killer leaving clues as to which killer he's NOT each time. Other reviewers are being too harsh on this book, because I actually enjoyed Baldacci trying something else. As a novelty read, don't toss it out, but it's not something I care to see him do a lot of in the future after discovering better works from this talented man.
Book Review: Well, it is a novel that is hard to put down . . . but Summary: 3 Stars
. . . the author blew all possible believeability in his writing when, towards the very end of the book, he writes, "She couldn't know it, but Eddie had at the same time been circling around her and had fired at the exact same instant as she. Beating odds of probably a billion to one, the two bullets had collided, causing the explosive spark she'd seen." After reading that I felt I had a Jon Stewart look on my face -- and I was by myself. For me, it ruined the whole book. That one paragraph could have easily been left out and not changed the book at all. Why did Baldacci feel compeled to put it in there? I mean, c'mon ! ! !
Book Review: Hour Game is one of the worst books I've ever read Summary: 1 Stars
This is the first (and last) book by David Baldacci that I've ever read. He is one of the worst best-selling writers I've ever read. He writes almost every sentence of dialog in the form of a Tom Swifty sentence ("We've got to get out of here," said King, menacingly). His flair for melodramatic overstatement is second to none. The actions of the characters make no sense at all. For example, when Michelle sees a laser from a gun sight pointed at the chest of her trusty sidekick, Sean King, she says, "Sean, don't move!" instead of "Sean, dive for cover!!!" Bottom line - save your money and buy something worthwhile!
Book Review: Not Worth the 25-Cent Cost Summary: 2 Stars
When I found "Hour Game" in paperback at our local library's monthly book sale, I thought I had hit pay dirt. But I cannot believe that this author who wrote such gripping gems such as "The Winner" and "Absolute Power" could turn out such a dog. Long, boring, and confusing. I fear that Mr. Baldacci hired an "aspiring young writer" to "help" him crank out a quick book. I cannot pass this book along to my friends -- I couldn't do that to them. It will be tossed into our blue recycle bin. What a waste. What a shame.
Book Review: True, not one of Baldacci's best, but still a great thriller Summary: 4 Stars
I must say i have never spent such a long time reading in one sitting as i did this book. The characters are not as deep as other characters Baldacci has written about in the past, such as the characters in "The Winner." There are a lot of people to keep in mind while reading the book, and it is important to remember their jobs and what their role is, which is hard at times because there are so many of them. It is a great thriller nonetheless and is fun for those who like good whodunit novels
