Book Reviews of How I Became a PirateBook Review: great fun Summary: 5 Stars
Jeremy, probably feeling a little neglected on the beach, goes off with a band of pirates. He feels his parents won't mind as as long as he is back in time for soccer practice the next day. Initially, he finds this adventure to be exciting, liberating and great fun. Soon he realizes a pirate's life is not exactly ideal. There's no tucking in, no books, and no goodnight kisses! Of course, a storm must swoop down on the ship and the treasure is in peril. Jeremy has the ideal solution, which you'll love. This is a truly fun book for children ages 4-9. My students really enjoy this as a read aloud and then being able to revisit it on their own.
Book Review: Best Little Boys Book Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book for my 3 y.o. son this past February. It has by far become not only his favorite book but the favorite book of my five year old daughter. They love screaming the words of the crew when we read this book together. The story line is wonderful - a small boy who joins a crew of pirates, learns what he likes and doesn't like about the pirates, lots of exciting adventures, a shark, a bad storm, and a treasure to bury. It's precious, and the illustrations are superb. This is perhaps the best little boys book I have ever bought (I should know - I'm a kid's book junkie), and it's a great book for little girls as well.
Book Review: Maybe not for 4 or 5 year olds Summary: 3 Stars
Perhaps save this for older children, maybe 6 and up? Some of the reasons - the pirates just take the boy with them. They don't ask, nor does the boy tell his parents. With all the real headlines out there, you may not want to have to tell your children why the pirates took him without talking to his parents.
Also -no mention where the pirates got their loot. Would be nice if some how the author mentioned they were good pirates.
Also the back cover of the book and dustjacket, has a large, full page skull and crossbones on it! Could cause some bad dreams for the little ones.
Book could have been better.
Book Review: A Family Favorite Summary: 5 Stars
I don't noramlly buy children's books. But after checking this one out from the library, then missing it when it was returned, I bought it for my four-year-old son. Not only does he love it, but his two-year old sister loves it (and so do Mom and Dad!). The Pirates aren't scary, the pictures are great, and it's so fun to read! My kids love to shout along with the pirate crew. They look for the scraggly cat (he's only on the boat) and the parrot. They want me to read it every night, and I gladly do. We are perfecting our pirate voices. This book is a treasure -- but I wouldn't dare bury it in my back yard!
Book Review: A good fun story for little kids Summary: 5 Stars
This story reminds me of either the reenactor friends I had when I was a kid, or being out at the hunting camp when I was a teenager. The humor is great. The characters are almost like members of my family! The rant on disliking vegetables, well, if you look at most of the food pirates ate, it`s not that far off.
My little 4 year old boy who is nuts about pirates and 18th century stuff insists I read this to him before he goes to bed!
It`s a great bedtime story, and will help young children to be interested in having a story before sleeping. I`ll have to get the sequel for his birthday!
