As someone who enjoyed Lowndes's book `How to Talk to Anyone', I impulsively snapped up a copy of `How to Make Anyone Fall in Love With You' when I saw it reduced in a second-hand bookstore. However, I soon realised that the book is actually quite disturbing in the advice it gives for falling in love.
For a start, why on earth would you want to `make' someone fall in love with you? Love should be as natural as possible and should certainly not involve one person manipulating another into falling for them or using mental thumbscrews in order to trick someone into thinking you are something you're not. Chemistry cannot be faked and I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to fake it. Surely every man and woman out there wants to be in a relationship with someone who genuinely loves them, not someone who they tricked using a silly book.
The advice given in this book can basically be summed up as follows: In order to make someone fall in love with you, you need to pretend that you are exactly like them - do the things they like to do, pander to their sexual desires, react to things the same way they do, etc... In addition, you need to use a bunch of verbal and non-verbal tricks to try to make them feel comfortable with you, to make them feel as if you have formed an intimate connection. The idea of doing this is rather disturbing and the complete loss of individuality and self-respect that a person must face if they actually do these things is certain to be huge.
The author also seems to be obsessed with class differences. This book seems to portray working class people as beer-swilling no-hopers who need to be `improved' and all upper class people are polo playing snobs oozing class and sophistication from every pore. The author's advice for the bedroom is also fairly limiting. The same old stereotypical rubbish is wheeled out about what men and women want sex-wise. Apparently, men want pretend moaning, wiggling, pouting and porno lip-licking whilst women want sensitivity, gentleness and words out of a Harlequin romance novel. As someone who enjoys romance novels, I can't deny that I like the whole `off into the sunset' thing, but there are two sides to everyone's character. I found a lot of the advice quite stereotypical and some of it even insulting - e.g. the author suggests a woman should hint that she's interested in having a threesome to excite her lover.
Overall, this isn't a book I'd recommend. I think it's far better to be yourself with people and see how things develop. I wouldn't want to go out on a date trying to memorise ways to make someone fall in love with me. It is manipulative and, to be honest, rather seedy.

Hard to believe anything other than luck and maybe fate, never mind a book, can make someone fall in love with you, but oddly enough, Leil Lowndes seems to offer the advice that can do just that in How to Make Anyone Fall in Love with You. The sensation of falling in love comes from a chemical secreted by the nervous system, phenylethylamine (or PEA, as Lowndes calls it, as in "Scientists tell us only PEA-brained people fall in Love"), and the trick is to trigger the manufacture of PEA in your potential love partner, giving him or her the sensation of being in love. Lowndes offers 85 techniques for "Hunters and Huntresses" to capture their "Quarry." Much of what the book offers is common sense--the power of eye contact and compliments--but it's presented in a new way and with such detail that it seems that it can't help but work.
Following some of her advice will have you treading that fine line between nice and obsequious, and at times, this book may sound offensive to some, advising the reader to play what may sound like games. Lowndes is aware of this, and she offers some caveats, but still it is hard to get past advice such as, "Show him you're smart, but remember--not too smart" or "Watch your Quarry's reactions to outside stimuli, then show the same emotions." In all fairness, Lowndes doesn't play favorites: her advice to men and women can be equally appalling. Yet, the relaxed style of this book, presenting solid wisdom with a bit of scientific support, makes this book appealing, and, who knows, maybe it will make you more appealing, too! --Jenny Brown
