Book Reviews of Hundred-Dollar Baby (Spenser)

Book Review: Borrring!
Summary: 1 Stars

Okay, I'm new to Robert B Parker's Spencer (other than old TV series with Robert Urich). But this thing was a disaster! Predictable. Too much cutesy dialog. And what's with Susan and her Harvard Ph.D.? So what? Give it a rest! Characters one dimensional and shallow. Seems Mr. Parker was wanting badly to wrap this turkey up but just couldn't find a way to do it. So he plods along with a plot that was clear after the first 25 pages (or sooner). Yeah, yeah he's made $$$s writing for years and has been a top crime writer for years. Taking nothing away, but maybe it's time to do something else. Have a Jessie Stone waiting in the wings to read, but after this one am a bit gun shy (no pun intended) of whether or not I want to waste time. Wasn't knocked out with this one.

Book Review: Good read, baby!
Summary: 4 Stars

I have to confess, I didn't read the book. I listened to the audio version of Hundred Dollar Baby. I've not experienced any of Parker's books before so I was meeting Spenser and company for the first time. Parker knows his characters inside and out. I enjoyed the interplay between Spenser and Hawk and learning about Spenser's 'softer side' in relation to Susan and Pearl. The mystery, I felt, was a bit predictable as it was clear who the guilty party was long before the end. I also found the conversations between Susan and Spenser to be a bit repetitive. (She does go on a bit about her degree.) All in all, it was an enjoyable read and I would pick up another Parker novel and jump into Spenser's world again.

Book Review: Fits like a pair of comfortable old shoes. . .
Summary: 4 Stars

Not much new here but Parker does it with such grace and style, just like his classic anti hero Spencer who is back talking wise with both the bad guys and the cops. This time out he is back helping April Kyle (he rescued her a couple times in earlier books) who's high class whorehouse is threatened by some shady characters, but he soon finds out that April is lying to him along with just about everyone else. Spencer of course won't let things lay, and he soon is untangling a complicated web of mobsters and con men. Nothing too challenging here as far has the mystery, but fans of this series should be satisfied.

Book Review: Great introduction
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my first read by this author. Just randomly picked a book and I lucked up on a good one. The writing was engaging to the point that I did not want to put the book down, but wanted to keep turning the pages even when I was sleepy. And I thought it was clever how he wrote about what would be considered an undesirable quality in a person and made it seem non-judgemental. I somehow developed empathy for April. It takes a great writer to be able to do that. This will not be my last read by this author.

Book Review: Hell of an author
Summary: 5 Stars

Parker writes the best dialogue of any detective mystery author. He does not drown you in descriptions, they are crisp and short. You never lose track of who is speaking. Parker makes it clear. If you have ever read a series of several quotes and have to go back up the page to see who said a particular quote? Never in Parker's books. He has written more than 50 books, and I am trying to read every single one!!
