Book Reviews of I, Alex Cross

Book Review: What a letdown.
Summary: 3 Stars

Just finished listening to the unabridged audio version of this book and all I can say is what a total letdown. The book starts off great and I was thinking here is finally a decent Alex Cross novel since the last one I read (Mary Mary) was a bit of a disappointment. The problem is that Patterson does a great job reeling you into the story with its myriad of characters and political intrigue but then at the end he just reveals the killer with really no explanation. I mean, he puts in all this effort to create this backstory which leads to something we hope will blow our minds and it just falls flat. I agree with the other reviewers here that it seems Patterson just needed to finish the story quickly and really did all his readers a disservice. I also thought the whole Nana subplot (could it even be called a subplot?) was overdrawn, but it did not bother me nearly as much as this very lame ending. C'mon Patterson, give your readers a bit more respect.

Book Review: Shockingly Predictable and Boring
Summary: 1 Stars

I, Alex Cross was such a disappointment, perhaps if it makes it to film or dvd some re-writes will take place. How boring is a sex scandal in Washington DC with ties to the White House? And right there with that demeanor I remained throughout the entire read.

I echo those who thought the Nana references could be erased. I even wished that she had died too just to feel a pulse while reading. This is certainly not the best representation for the Alex Cross character. The entire book seemed a bit juvenile and perhaps my age and experience left nothing to the imagination. Even the villain Zeus was under represented. I would have liked the book to dig deeper in his darkness to keep my braincells awake.

If you twisted my arm, I would recommend you pick up a copy for the bookshelf in the bathroom.

Disappointed in Brooklyn, NY

Book Review: Don't Mess With Alex Cross
Summary: 5 Stars

Don't mess with Detective Alex Cross, especially when it comes to his family members. With one family member murdered, and another in the hospital fighting for their life, Cross sets out to help solve a very personal murder case--a series of brutal murders that, not only involve his niece, but will take him to the top echelons of the US government. James Patterson brings to the table, once again, all of his previous masterful talent and bold imagination. Although, some passages may disturb the squeamish, I was held captive throughout the entire book. I especially like the surprise ending. This may be one of Patterson's best efforts yet.

The thriller is written in short chapters, which I like, and the font is large enough to make reading enjoyable. The prose is clear, succinct, and paints a picture of full-blown evil and terror. A fast read.

Book Review: Waste of space
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a really rotten book - after a sort of promising start, the plot becomes ludicrous - who are all these people covering up for Zeus? And who is the poor lout who gets iced instead of Z? I got the audio version from my library so I did not read any blurbs, but to denigrate Tony Hillerman is beyond the pale. Hillerman's books not only have interesting story lines, but the characters and aura of the Navajo nation and locale put the reader right smack dab in the middle of the action. Patterson should be half so good. Where are the editors? I would suggest returning the book to the store where purchased and explaining why - I have done this a couple of times when I could not believe what tripe I had received. Perhaps enough returns would make some impact! Meantime, it's back to Robert Parker, Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiaasen ...... Can one assign no stars?

Book Review: My first James Patterson book.......so confused, so not impressed.

Are there reasons the nutcase/murderer Zeus kill everybody he had sex with? Is that a [...]-and-kill [...]?

Did Zeus realize that if he killed everybody after he had sex with, there would be no more people for him to [...] or kill?

The [...]-and-kill took place in a whore house, it would be hard for Zeus to cover it up forever. Did Zeus or even the writer realize it?

The cover-up of the [...]-and-kill involved so many people that eventually it would be difficult to cover it up.

This was my first James Patterson book. I was confused and filled with questions that I'm going to return "Along came a Spider" untouched along with this book I just read to the library.
