Book Reviews of I Brake for Meltdowns: How to Handle the Most Exasperating Behavior of Your 2- to 5-year-old

Book Review: For the parents who what to have problems with their kids when they get older!
Summary: 1 Stars

This book was not what I expected from reading the profiles of the authors. If these authors truly have kids they must have the most difficult time if they follow their own advice. I'm not sure what makes the authors qualified to even write such a book. They seem to have some common sense approaches that anyone should be able to figure out on their own. If anyone reads this book and finds it to be revealing then maybe the book is helpful. However, there are some major problems with this book. The first being it does not approach the behavior of the child by addressing the confidence of the parent. The book is ambiguous throughout, stating the "you are the parent, and in control" however, the concept of letting your child throw fits and get away with if by reasoning with them pops up. This belittles the authority of the parents, and teaches children there are no real consequences in life and that they can get away with any behavior. My wife and I call this the "free to be me" approach, (or let your child do what they want, because they need to develop on their own). Children need guidance and consequences when they practice bad behavior. Just as many people say "children do not come with instruction manuals" and children do not come preprogrammed either to figure out stuff on their own from you talking to them. The authors have a comical 2 pages on what they call "corporal punishment" and they make it clear that it is "wrong" and hurtful and proven that it does nothing but hurt a child later in life. Sorry but these statements are very lopsided. I wish they wrote on both sides of the argument. Spanking when needed (and I say when needed) is very effective, and works for young children form 2 to 5 years. Using spanking for everything is not appropriate either and can be hurtful and wrong. Another problem with this book is the authors write about talking and explain to your child when they are acting up, or just letting them flail their arms and kick and scream while you let them. Believe me if you follow this you will have problem when your children grow up. Quick action is needed, and swift action and consequence must follow, your child needs to know you are in charge not them. I suggest for anyone after reading this book to read The New Dare to Discipline by Dr. James C. Dobson, and look in to the total transformation by James Lehman. If you have young ones and you are a new parent booth will help you now and in the future.
