Book Reviews of I Hope They Serve Beer in HellBook Review: Reach for the Stars, Tucker Max Summary: 2 Stars
First off, I can rest easier at night because I didn't pay a cent for this book. Tucker Max is a self pro-claimed douche who is making money by sharing his tacky sexual exploits and penchant for drunken shenanigans on some website and by writing books like these. Just because he calls himself an a-hole throughout doesn't give him carte blanche with me, but for the most part, he has a specific (woman)target. Because he preys on those that allow him to continue to be a douche, I don't feel sorry for them at all. He makes a good point to women out there when he says "men will treat you the way you let them treat you." For this he gets an extra star. Now I am not saying that men should take this in consideration and that they should put out little effort in hopes to get a payoff, but no self respecting woman would put up with that. There are no victims in this book. You know what? There are. Max thinks he's putting his cards out on the table and proving how much of an a-hole he is (funny or not, with his coup de grace story at the end) but during the book he talks about how his "game" has evolved. Today, he makes no claim to women that he cares about them personally in any way, but when he was young, he did. Naturally, he wouldn't share those stories as they would expose him as more of an unlikeable a-hole than just a goofy scumbag. Anyway, I find sexual humour crass, I find toilet humour low brow, and the two combined nauseating, and that's basically what this whole book contained so I didn't find myself laughing, but that's just me (before I picked this up I had no idea who this clown was). I was also apalled at how this guy's "dish it out, but can't take it" attitude when it came to his women practices. Not to give out too much info but at one point he becomes horrified at the realization that the women (of questionable morals) he pursues might actually be doing the same things with other men that they do to him. Uh, really? Overall, This is it for Tucker Max. For the rest of his life, he's going to only be known for being a total cad. No one will ever take him seriously again. That's it. And you know what? This behaviour does have a shelf life. Aim high, Tucker Max. I'm sure your parents are really proud of you, you walking caricature, you.
Book Review: Shameless debauchery Summary: 3 Stars
A raunchy egomaniac and his offensive, shameless stories. Wow. It's like bungee-jumping into the middle of the mosh pit at a fraternity grain party. I'm one of those girls who liked the Tucker book. Well, actually this is sort of a mixed review. The first story I read was the Tucker tries(...). I nearly peed myself it was so funny. For shock value and out of control laughs, you could stop after that story and be satisfied. The next story I read was pretty funny. The next brought a few chuckles, and by the fifth I was getting bored. Vomit and poopy pants is only shocking and funny once; not a dozen stories in a row. It seems pretty obvious that he decided early on to "never let the truth get in the way of a good story". However, once you get over that literary hurdle of discovery, there are some really funny parts.
Don't get me wrong, if you like comedy and can overcome the frat-i-tude its worth reading a few of the stories. For the price of 2 drinks, there are few things to read for such out of control laughs right out of the gate. I don't mean to knock Tucker, not that he'd care. I assumed by the content, writing and vocabulary this was written by a college freshman. When I later learned he's a 30ish attorney, I was shocked. Hopefully his next book he'll sharpen his pencil and delve a tad deeper into the memoir craft.
For readers, I hope this tip helps. (It sure would have helped me). I recommend taking this book in small doses. Limit yourself to reading one story every few days, and you'll love it. As for Tucker fans who are getting bored waiting for his sequel, there's another hilarious book right up this alley that takes it a whole notch higher.
High Heels and Dirty Deals - Globetrotting Tales of Debauchery from a Binge-drinking Nymphomaniac
Book Review: Tucker Max - tales from an American Psycho Summary: 3 Stars
I think it is necessary in the review of a book like this to include your demographic. Therefore know that I am EXACTLY the type of person that this book is aimed for.
Overall I had mixed feelings about this book.
Positives!
- It IS pretty funny in some places. Some of Tucker's friends are the best (SLINGBLADE!)
- It's a quick read, entertaining.
- It is generally well-written!
Negatives.
- Tucker get's annoying. The stories get old. By the end, it's like the same thing over and over again. (Tucker goes out. Tucker gets hammered. TUcker bangs girl. Tucker throws up on girl. Etc...) And honestly, he wasn't a very likeable "protagonist" for me, if you want to call him that, though this wasn't actually a book, rather a collection of stories. Like I said, he gets annoying. After hearing about how many girls he's slept with 10 times, it's enough.
- The stories are generally too similar.
- The stories are perhaps over-embellished. Now, I'm not saying I didn't believe them. I believed every one. But they are construed in a way which they are ALMOST unbelievable. (At times)
- Tucker claims he's an asshole, but trust me, he's much worse. This dude needs therapy, if he is still acting like this. He is psychotic. The way he treats women at times is disgusting, even for a dude like myself.
It is funny, like I said, but I would recommend reading it in portions, not in one sitting. You'll understand.
I WOULD recommend this to the right audience, despite the negative comments, just for the laughs. If your a girl, you probably won't like this book. If your over 40, you probably won't like it, either. Or maybe you will.
Book Review: Truly a guilty pleasure for this chick! Summary: 4 Stars
For those who don't yet know the wonderment that IS Tucker Max and his writings, please go indulge yourselves! Forget the hype and the controversy...Go to the nearest bookstore to buy his book of hilarity- I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell. That's what I did. I heard all the naysayers with words like 'womanizer' and I honestly wanted to hate him. But like everything in life, I'm not one to go on someone else's word; I need to see for myself to form my own opinion. Definitely not for the weak of heart, prudish or easily offended, this book tells of Tucker's true life adventures of pure debauchery and alchohol-induced scenarios that will leave the reader in guilt-laden stitches. Talk about your hate-to-love or annual guilty-pleasure read, this book is the perfect conversational piece, full of promise to stir up even the most reticent opinions around. On the NY Times bestseller list for years, the book is now an Indie film opening in limited theaters Sept 25 and then more widely released in the weeks to come. Mostly considered a 'Guys' film, it's focused on Tucker Max as a man whose narcissism leads to a road of discovering what truly is most important in life or at least that life just doesn't consist of himself. Written by Tucker Max and Nils Parker, the film hopes to be the first of possibly many of Tuckers writings followed in the vein of the college cult classic. Be daring- take your girlfriends & your grandmas... to quote one of Tucker's favorite lines, "If they can't take a joke..." If we can't laugh at the ugliness in life, doesn't it prevail? I'm afraid this chick is going to buy his next book as well... keep the funnies coming Mr. Max. :)
Book Review: Funny at first.. but author is truly a jerk Summary: 1 Stars
Yes, it's funny at first to read Tucker Max misadventures. But as I read I was increasingly offended by the author's displays of contempt, just below the surface, towards the very women who are his enablers and benefactors. This ever ready hostility towards his partners shows its ugly head if any of them pushes back even slightly, whereupon he immediately unleashes a vicious tirade of verbal abuse, calling them the worst possible names in loud public humiliations, and making it clear what he really thinks of them. This guy has issues. First he does everything he can to trick and manipulate women into sex, and then when they cave, immediately turns on them with ridicule for having allowed themselves to be tricked. In other words, if a woman sleeps with him, it proves she is a whore. Nice guy. He would never behave this way towards his male friends. Just imagine if someone owned a business and everytime a customer bought something, he went in the other room and ridiculed them because they were a stupid sucker to have fallen for his scam. Would anyone admire such a jerk? So why is it OK if it's a boy-girl thing? Not all that different from serial killers who use prostitutes and then murder them- because they are prostitutes.
Even more baffling is that there continue to be legions of women and girls who not only don't mind being treated this way but seem to seek it out. I wonder how many of the girls Tucker Max encounters understand what his attitude towards them really is. Repeated in story after story, it's a bit sickening. Book should be required reading for teen age girls; don't get used this way, if you have any self-respect.
