Book Reviews of I Like You: Hospitality Under the InfluenceBook Review: I REALLY wanted to love it but . . . Summary: 3 Stars
I am a big Sedaris family fan, and also have a modest collection of pre-Nixon era cookbooks and etiquette guides, so I was thrilled when my audio book arrived. While there are moments from the book that are terrific (pretty much all of disc 2), the rest of it was just not as twisted or original as I had hoped. I like my humor biting, pithy, even mildly disturbing, and generally the sort of thing that could get you fired at work. Some of the book made me laugh, but other sections contained long list after list, or advice for entertaining that was just too mundane to hold my interest (e.g. make sure you have plenty of ice, be sure to send information about parking on invitations etc.). Even with a section on vaginal maintenance, I just can't give it my top rating.
Book Review: Best birthday gift ever! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this book as a gift for a crazy friend of mine and, after reading it, decided to get a copy for my brother-in-law, and my partner, too. Amy Sedaris' comments are witty, insightful, and most importantly, very funny; it's almost like she has wiretapped your inner thoughts and picked out all of your twisted neuroses to share with the public at large. A friend commented that every time she reads the book, she feels that Amy's looking over her shoulder and taking notes on all the crazy little thoughts that are going through her head. So if you are looking for the perfect gift to get for a friend who loves to laugh and enjoyed watching "Strangers with Candy", your search is over. Pick up a copy of this book, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Book Review: I like you: Hospitality Under the Influence Summary: 2 Stars
Enjoyed the format and the down-to-earth commentary. There were a few areas of which I found offensive. With the thought of young people (actually anyoen who believes in taking care of themselves), I would not want them reading this book which rationalizes poor behaviors, ie: showing a picture of the author choosing between alcohol, marijuana and cocaine. The author says that when she has parties, she caters to all her guests, not judging their choice of DRUGS - meaning it's ok for them to use drugs in her home. There were several other areas of concern but after I read the rationalizing of behaviors that hurt people, it wasn't for me and it wouldn't be for my friends. I'm not a fuddy duddy but see No value in OKing drug use. I sent the book back.
Book Review: wow a lotta book for the money Summary: 5 Stars
The price stalled me for a bit but now that I have it, I think the price is a good deal because there is so much going on in the book. I had the exact same contact paper on my paper clip necklace. I didn't see a faux leather weave pencil cup made out of a baby food jar, masking tape and brown shoe polish in the book but there are a lot of reference photos of the author tanned and in tan pantyhose for those recipes that instruct food to be cooked until tanned. Also, if you tend to stare at photos of ethnic Greek women looking for similiarities and the inspiration for the nonstop creation of kourai, this is the book for you. Lots of pictures of the author especially her FEET with great photographic detail of her toes and toe nails.
Book Review: Finally! A book about entertaining I can relate to! Summary: 5 Stars
I don't think a book about entertaining has ever made me laugh to the point of tears before! Seeing peanuts! Gift ideas for nuns! Dad come home cake! Change your medicine chest from herbal remedies to something that works! The section on guest etiquette is priceless and hits the nail on the head. Todd Oldham's photography with its lurid lighting/drab hues is amazing. And the children's games section alone is worth twice the price of the book.
This isn't kitsch of the moment--this defines an edge of humor that deserves a spotlight. Amy Sedaris gets it! Cheers to her and her wonderful book. It is a generous, warm, inspiring and hysterically funny treasure that knocked me over with happiness. I will enjoy it for years.
