Book Reviews of I Miss You: A First Look At Death

Book Review: Not for a Christian or religious family, and of NO theraputic value
Summary: 1 Stars

There are a great many books out of far more theraputic, comforting value than this read. It was a terrible disappointment to me, in the tone, and much of its frank, clinical wording on the subject. For a book to describe their loved who has passed by saying "They do not think, they do not feel, they do not remember anything;etc..." Basically saying, - dead is dead, - that's life.
How do you offer a child comfort and reassurance that their beloved REMEMBERS THEM, STILL THINKS OF THEM, AND IS WATCHING OVER THEM, - or furthermore - that THEY WILL SEE THEM AND BE WITH THEM AGAIN ONE DAY - As we are taught - those of of who have FAITH, anyway -- if this is how you explain death to them? I am an adult, - and this description of death deeply bothered ME -- I wouldn't DARE read to a child who is confused, afraid, and hurting after losing someone they love.
I would only recommended this book to those who are aetheists - because I do not believe this book would be of any solace or hope to any child with a belief system, based on how cold and "scientific" it explains death. It may have its moments in which it glorifies embracing memories -- but that is the extend of its sensitivity and tenderness, I'm sorry to say.
The very best books to seek out for such a sensitive and delicate topic, for such sensitive and delicate minds, who are emotionally distraught, confused, and deeply hurting -- are those by Marge Heegaard, and if a death is impending and closeby because of age, illness or tragedy, - "Help Me Say Goodbye" by Janis Silverman -- these books offer true therapy for grieving children, -- by allowing them to express their felings the way a child does best -- with their own drawings and writings, -- the child co-authors the book, in that the author not only prompts the child to express their thoughts and feelings, pose inspiring questions for introspection and reflection as they heal and grow, -- but also make very certain to explain what the child most needs to understand -- nothing they did or said caused this to happen (which is what most fear), and that their feelings and emotions are natural, - nothing is wrong with them, and that they will eventually find understanding and hope again..... and gives the child a precious and priceless keepsake of their beloved, their feelings for that speacial someone, their memories, -- their good days and bad as they searched themselves through this time - and gives them something everlasting and unwaivering - an outlet for expressing the depth of their love, which in turn strengthens their faith and hope. The books by these authors will nurture your child and encourage tremendous growth.
"Water Bugs and Dragonflies" is an incredibly touching and profoundly healing book - short story, but absolutely invaluable in its ingenious methaphor, and strong Religious grounding in having HOPE and FAITH. This however, unlike the previous recommendations, is a story rather than a workbook/journal/sketchbook -- but is of equal benefit to a child facing such a frightening, confusing time of great sorrow.
This book just does not offer that to the child, in any way.
Terribly disappointing.
I highly suggest seeking out other books on the subject, so many far surpass this read.

Summary of I Miss You: A First Look At Death

When a close friend or family member dies, it can be difficult for children to express their feelings. This book helps boys and girls understand that death is a natural complement to life, and that grief and a sense of loss are normal feelings for them to have following a loved one's death. Titles in this sensitively presented series explore the dynamics of various relationships experienced by children of preschool through early school age. Kids are encouraged to understand personal feelings and social problems as a first step in dealing with them. Written by psychotherapist and counselor Pat Thomas, these books promote positive interaction among children, parents, and teachers. The story lines are simple and direct--easily accessible to younger children. There are full-color illustrations on every page.
