Book Reviews of I'm Just Here for the Food: Version 2.0Book Review: A culinary textbook. Summary: 5 Stars
Having recently gotten more interested in molecular gastronomy, I found this book extremely informative and interesting.
Till date, I have been making pasta with a little oil to prevent it from sticking together, but after reading Alton's lengthy explanation as to how to REALLY cook pasta, and how the oil doesn't help at all, I made the switch, kept my water on a "rolling boil" and was very pleased with my al- dente pasta.
There are lots of gems of information in this book, and some southern recipes too. The book is visually informative and has sections for most types of food.
This is definitely not a "recipe book" but now I am able to cook methodically, and I am able to enhance the flavour of each ingredient, based on timing and heat.
A must for the getting it perfect cook.
Book Review: The Incredible Alton Brown Summary: 5 Stars
Any fan of the Food Network knows of the show "Good Eats". In my humble opinion it is one of the best shows on television. I had recently purchased the book "I'm Just Here for the Food", and am very happy with it. It carries over from the TV show the wonderful wit and motherlode of knowledge that I expect from the show. Just like its author, the book is put together in a highly organized and logical manner which makes it easy to navigate. I was using it in my kitchen the first day I got it. Of course I would rate the design and graphics as an A+, as well as quality of the writing. Bottom line, even if you are not an amature chef you will be able to use and enjoy this book from day one, and a suprisingly entertaining read for its subject matter.
Book Review: Great book for a beginner or just someone who wants a simple, food-science explanation of the how and why Summary: 5 Stars
I just bought this book yesterday at a store on clearance for 90% off.... $3.25!!! It's original price was $32.50 and it was BRAND NEW. Lucky Me! I thought... there MUST be something wrong with this book. But then again, it IS Alton Brown, how bad could it be? I have been reading it off and on since yesterday. I've already followed 2 of the recipes and they came out great. I'm not a "beginner" cook, but I don't cook often because I'm not that great at it. This book has energized me and helped me understand a few key points that, I think, will really make a difference for me. No matter if you find it on super sale like I did, or still have to pay close to the cover price, I think this is a great book. Great Job as usual, Alton!
Book Review: Best cookbook ever Summary: 5 Stars
First of all, if you read a bad review of this book, disregard it. That person either didn't get the science in Alton Brown's "I'm Just Here For The Food," or was just looking for a regular, ordinary cookbook.
This is the cookbook I've been waiting 10 years for - a cookbook that finally explains the "why," in addition to the "how." Even if I never use a single recipe in this book, it will still be the best cookbook I ever owned, because it has taught me how to be a better cook, and to better understand the various processes involved in cooking, no matter what recipe I'm using.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to cook better, rather than just cook something new.
Book Review: Great how to cooking book, very entertaining Summary: 5 Stars
I love Alton Browns cookbooks. His book takes it one step further and shows you the science behind the cooking. Couple that with interesting food projects that demonstrate the science of the recipes. His recipes are very unique, not to mention tasty!!I love his sirloin steak and now when I cook I cant help but bring up the science behind it; is it convection heat or radiation? I wish more cook books were done in this style! I've found most books dont measure up to his as they dont engage the mind. Theyre just recipes and ingredients and while that is effecient for everyday eating it doesnt stoke the passion of those who love food. This one does!Definitely recommended as a good introduction book for beginners.
