Book Review: pastoral care in the picture

Dykstra gives a nicely written overview of the development of pastoral care: the relation and tensions between theological language and psychological language. His survey starts with Boisen and his concept of 'the living human document' and then he leads us through the development of the different schools of pastoral care as they have become manifest in their leading metaphors or images of pastoral care. I miss in his book somewhat the European Barthian kerygmatic view, presumably because it is quite contrary to the the development of American pastoral care, which is more closely connected it seems to a clinical setting and the pragmatic and psychologi(zising) way of looking, than in Europe, although the kerugmatic approach in Europe nowadays hardly exists anymore,at least in circles where pastoral care is professionalized. It would be interesting though to read once more E. Thurneysen and his followers to see if there might be something to discover, that can help us with the regaining of the theological 'proprium' in our pastoral care instead of getting more and more sucked into the psychological dimension. I missed in the book also the very important contribution of Ivan Boszormenyi Nagy, the contextual approach: the primate of the ethical dimension in human relations. The models of pastoral care that pointed to the social dimensions and political as a correction of onesided psychological ways of looking and interpreting were brought in by Dykstra but would have deserved more end deeper exploration. All in all it is a good and informative book.
Summary of Images of Pastoral Care
This book is an edited volume of works that have predominated over the past several decades in contemporary pastoral theology. Through the writings of nineteen leading voices in the history of pastoral care, Dykstra shows how each contributor developed a metaphor for understanding pastoral care. Such metaphors include the solicitous shepherd, the wounded healer, the intimate stranger, the midwife, and other tangible images. Through these works, the reader gains a sense of the varied identities of pastoral care professionals, their struggles for recognition in this often controversial field, and insight into the history of the disciple.
