Book Reviews of Impossible

Book Review: Teen Issues Entwined With Magic
Summary: 2 Stars

I think it's a neat idea - but I didn't like it here. The writing is good, and the book is a page turner.
I will list the reasons I didn't like it, in no particular order, because I feel strongly about all of them;
A teen girl is raped by a boy. The boy does not mean to rape her, because he is possessed by an evil fairy. He is a nice, kind of geeky guy. The same evil fairy either makes him get killed in a car accident, or he kills himself that way because of guilt.
The teen girl gets pregnant - because evil fairy happens to be the person who picks up her emergency pills for her. Evil fairy also works at her foster mom's job, and gets the woman to spill all sorts of info with his power.
Teen girl marries old friend who is home from college, so if she can't complete the three tasks (and losses her mind) he will be able to help her baby. There were reasons given for this, like custody. But I think it's weird. Sure, she's his friend, but he shouldn't throw away his life and have to take care of a wife and child when it's not his kid. They aren't even dating before she gets pregnant! They sort of fall in love over the book - I don't think a very stressful, emotional few months are a really good time to decide whether to get married or not. There aren't really reasons for them falling in love - it's like they just do, because they are the hero and heroine. They don't seem to have much in common,actually we don't learn that much about either of them. And his parents don't throw a fit that he's marrying a high-school girl (yeah he's older than her) who's pregnant with someone else's baby. Nor do they really freak out when told about the fairy guy - they just don't believe it, instead of bringing their son's fiancé to a psychiatrist.
The author makes it sound easy for the teens to get an apartment, go to college, and take care of the baby. Cause it's not bad compared to the whole supernatural fairy thing, apparently.
The girl doesn't seem to be very traumatized by being raped. Nor does the way her baby was conceived ever seem to bother her.
There is also the fact that this is another book that celebrates teen pregnancy. Anti-abortion and taking responsibility (though in this case the girl had no choice) are good messages. Celebrating keeping the baby, when there are so many people who want to adopt and when teen parenting is so difficult for the teens and their kid - that's just silly.
The fantasy isn't too strong. Mostly it's modern ways to do things that once would have been considered impossible.
The book seems to say `hey, real life issues aren't bad, fairies are!'. That made me angry, because this is not a real situation, and the combination of real life and fantasy just got too weird.
This could be a really great book, if the plot were a little different. As it was, I couldn't like it because of the way it demeaned real life issues by belittling them with fantasy.

Summary of Impossible

A beautifully wrought modern fairy tale from master storyteller and award-winning author Nancy Werlin.

Inspired by the classic folk ballad "Scarborough Fair," this is a wonderfully riveting and haunting novel of suspense, romance, and fantasy. Lucy is seventeen when she discovers that she is the latest recipient of a generations-old family curse that requires her to complete three seemingly impossible tasks or risk falling into madness and passing the curse on to the next generation. Unlike her ancestors, though, Lucy has family, friends, and other modern resources to help her out. But will it be enough to conquer this age-old evil?
