Book Reviews of In Praise of Stay-at-Home Moms

Book Review: Half of the Story
Summary: 4 Stars

Dr. Laura strikes again, with a celebration of the contribution Moms make when they choose home versus the marketplace. And, she is a wonderful advocate. Mothers who invest in their families create a legacy which is incredibly positive. But that is just half of the story. It is also highly possible that Moms at Home can be powerhouses in increasing the wealth of their families, while maintaining their fulltime commitment to their kids.

A roadmap that presents the other side of that equation is presented in Megan Basham's book: Beside Every Successful Man, also available on Amazon - you can see my review there. She presents options, both exciting and practical, which are available to Moms at Home to enhance the earning power of their family partnership.

I realize this may make me sound like a shill - I am not; but, I am definitely a fan of both books.

Book Review: Obviously, not a stay at home mom
Summary: 5 Stars

Dr. Laura's new book In Praise of Stay at Home Moms is a blessing for us mothers who choose to stay home with our children. We need some recognition and praise for the sacrifices that us moms make. My husband works a full time job for very little money. He also tries to make some extra money on weekends so that we can barely make ends meet. We are not "LUCKY" to be able to stay home with our children, we made the choice. We eat PB&J sandwiches, drive crappy cars but live a very nice and happy life. If I went to work, we could have a lot more stuff that we don't really need. Nothing is worth Mommy Me being home to raise my children. If you don't like Dr. Laura, don't buy her book. Let us mother's who work very hard at home have a book of our own to let us know that we are doing what is best for our children.

Book Review: SAHM validation
Summary: 5 Stars

It's great to have someone finally write about the value that SAHM's (stay-at-home moms) have in our modern world. Dr. Laura validates our existence in a time when we are threatened with extinction. Some SAHMs hide in their homes in order to avoid the stares and whispered comments from 'Super Moms'. Some SM's lie in wait determined to enlighten us about our "wasted talents" or to lecture us about our children "losing the human rat race" if every minute of our child's day isn't scheduled with activities, extra sports programs and expensive schooling.

Thank you Dr. Laura for shining the light on us so we can come out into the sun with renewed confidence and less worry of extinction. Super Moms have had their decade in the spotlight; now SAHM's get a day on center stage. I think I can hear the applause! I like it. No, I love it!

Book Review: Important Message But Not Enough Substance to the Book
Summary: 2 Stars

While I agree with Dr. Laura's message, I was disappointed by "In Praise of Stay-at-Home Moms". The bulk of it was devoted to reprinting testimonials from Dr. Laura's fans about how wonderful being a SAHM is, how much better their marriages became once they quit their paid positions, how nannies & daycare workers can never love the child like a mom can, etc., etc. All true but I found these letters very repetitive. I guess some women are so insecure about their decision to be a SAHM that they need this kind of constant validation that they're doing the right thing, but not me.

I felt that Dr. Laura had taken what would be a good magazine article and padded it into a book. There's simply not enough substance to fill all 200 pages, so she basically ends up saying the same thing over and over.

Book Review: WOW! I'm not REALLY a stay-at-home mom....
Summary: 5 Stars

Thank you, Dr. Laura, for opening my eyes. I'm a homeschooling mom of four active kids and I've let everything else come before my kids...school work, a part-time at-home job, housework, shopping, etc. While reading this wonderful book, I have learned that I have so much to enjoy with my kids (and my husband) that I'm missing even though I'm right here with them at home. Our life together is soon to change for the better!

In the beginning of the book, Dr. Laura makes it clear that this is not a book designed to bash working moms. I think she did a wonderful job at pointing out all the wonders of childhood that the working mom misses by not being there with her kids.

This book will be my gift to any pregnant mother who is making a decision between day-care or mommy-care.
