Book Reviews of Ink Exchange (Wicked Lovely (Quality))Book Review: A Strong Second Summary: 4 Stars
Ink Exchange is the story of Leslie, who we are briefly introduced to in Wicked Lovely. This is one part that I love about the book, the continuity of the storyline. In Wicked Lovely we witness a scene where Aislinn finds herself in a tattoo parlor when Leslie and a Glamoured-up Faery show up. This scene brings into Ink Exchange.
Leslie is a strong female; my favorite type of character. She is a survivor in more ways than one but has a hard time coming to terms with her dark past. When her life turns upside down, she attempts to make the best of it, but how can one truly escape when there is nowhere to run? Like so many others before her, Leslie finds the ability to steal back her identity through the process of tattooing. By choosing her own art, her own message and having it permanently etched into her skin, she can reclaim part of the person that she knows she can be. What she doesn't quite expect, however, is that the tattoo she chooses comes packed with a powerful punch. As all ink does, the tattoo changes her; creates something different out of her flesh and bones. She went in seeking change and to everyone's horror, that's exactly what she might get.
A fantastic story of discovering one's own identity is coupled with an in-depth look into another of the Faery courts - the Dark Court. Irial, king of the Dark Court has chaos and destruction on his mind but also survival; survival for all the Fae swearing fealty to him. He is their lord and as such has the responsibility of ensuring their survival. His story is dark, sinister and when combined with Leslie's makes for one heck of a book!
Wicked Lovely was partly so delicious because of the romantic tension that we are readers could taste in the air. Ink Exchange is no different. I won't go too far into detail to spare you any spoilers, but lets just say that Leslie is definitely not an unwanted woman. Anytime one girl is surrounded by multiple men, vying for her attention there is bound to be tasty drama.
Now that I have finished reading Ink Exchange, I can honestly say that I really enjoyed the book. The beginning did one heck of a job drawing the reader in and leaving us begging for more. As you can probably tell, there is a "however" coming up. I loved the book; however, the middle section seemed to slow down just a bit. There would be times where we'd be keeping a secret from everyone and then, bam, secrets spilled. We'd be having a discussion with someone and then pow, all of a sudden we were talking with someone else. Part of it was a little choppy and part of it was that parts seemed a little inconsistent. Now, my feelings may change upon a second read, but for now they stand. I almost, almost, considered putting the book down for a few days to gain some outside perspective, but didn't. I kept at it and persevered. You know what? I'm glad I did.
The middle of Ink Exchange may have tumbled over itself ever so slightly, but I feel that the ending was incredibly strong! Marr has such a wonderful way with emotions that while reading the book I can't help but wonder if she doesn't have a little bit of Irial in her somewhere, feeding off the emotions that she elicits from us. She is truly a master and the ending of this book just goes to show that.
What I love about this series is that Marr has taken an overdone story - one of Faeries - and created a new and darker twist on it. The darkness of the stories, this one especially, really encourages the reader to think. We're left pondering out own lives, the changes that we have or haven't made and the journey that we find ourselves on. I won't lie and tell you that this Young Adult book is set out there strictly for entertainment's sake as I don't think any book is there to just entertain us. I believe that the hope of the author is to pull something from us, whether it is an emotion or a thought. Marr weaves some lovely messages throughout her books and I think those found in Ink Exchange are especially strong and important.
You're never going to be able to get away from it! Fair warning time: There are adult themes in Ink Exchange. There - you've been warned. I would say that themes are at the same level of those in Wicked Lovely, but I did want to still give you the warning. I would say that older teens should be just fine reading this book, but I would encourage parents to take a peek before handing this to their youngsters.
Summary of Ink Exchange (Wicked Lovely (Quality)) Unbeknownst to mortals, a power struggle is unfolding in a world of shadows and danger. After centuries of stability, the balance among the Faery Courts has altered, and Irial, ruler of the Dark Court, is battling to hold his rebellious and newly vulnerable fey together. If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow. Seventeen-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life. The tattoo does bring changes?not the kind Leslie has dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial together, drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into the faery world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils. . . .
