Book Reviews of Inkspell (Inkheart Trilogy)

Book Review: Brings you to another world!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Although the story continues in Inkspell, this book is more imaginative and spellbinding than the first. I highly enjoyed Inkheart, but I felt as though Inkspell caused my imagination to go wild with the images from the book. Funke provides wonderful descriptions and imagery in both Inkheart and Inkspell, but as opposed to Inkheart, you don't have to remind yourself that the characters in Inkheart are still in the world that we know.

However, it seems as though Inkheart moves faster plot-wise than Inkspell. I'm not saying that Inkspell is slow, but I found Inkheart slightly easier to read than Inkheart. Perhaps it was because Inkheart introduced something that was very new to me.

But Inkspell trumps Inkheart when it comes to imagination. Nevertheless, both books are extremely wonderful and quite a joy to read, even for someone who is not in her early teens anymore!

Book Review: Lose yourself in a good book
Summary: 4 Stars

Ignoring her own better judgment, Meggie does the impossible, reading herself into Inkworld. She's planning a sort of sightseeing vacation, a brief tour to see the fairies, talking trees, and other amazing elements described to her so vividly by her mom. Just like Gilligan's, Meggie's own little tour turns into something quite different. Once again, author Funke creates a place out of time, populated with many of the characters from Inkheart (Basta, Dustfinger, Farid, Mo), and adding many more, eg, a good prince and an evil one, strolling players, Dustfinger's wife and daughter). Once again, bonds of loyalty, love, selflessness drive and shape the energetic plot. Inkspell is a nonstop adventure set in a cruel, feudalistic society, where the written word, properly wielded, can be the most powerful force of all. Recommended for all who enjoy effective, credible fantasy fiction.

Book Review: Return to Inkworld where the story has a life of its own
Summary: 4 Stars

This is the second book in the Inkheart trilogy. When Dustfinger finally finds a way back to his homeland, there is much disruption back in this world. Farid, who wanted to go with him, finds Meggie and convinces her to read him into the book and Meggie decides to join him to warn Dustfinger about Basta. After their disappearance into the book, her parents and aunt are held hostage and then her parents are also brought to Inkworld along with some of the villians. Meggie finds out that the storyworld is a darker and more dangerous place than she ever suspected and the two search for Fenoglio, the author to attempt to put things right. As the story changes and goes out of control, the world that Fenoglio created is altered beyond his expectations leading to the death of a major character which I expect will be explored in the final book in the trilogy.

Book Review: Better than the first--and I loved that one
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of those incidents where the sequel is as good if not better than the original. I loved "Inkheart", but I must say I would pick this if forced to choose. Cornelia Funke has taken her clever concept of super reading aloud to an entirely new level as she actually lets us explore the world of the infamous Inkheart.

While the original book had a clever, interesting concept, this is more along the lines of classic fantasy adventure... and I love it all the more for it. The Inkworld is as good a fantasy land as one could ask for, which all the imaginative wonders and dangers.

The plot, as fun and interesting as it is, however, stands second to the character development here. I liked everyone in the first book--I loved them here.

This is a spectacular sequel in every sense of the word.

Book Review: Good Second Book in the Trilogy
Summary: 4 Stars

Inkspell carries the themes, characters and plot forward from Inkheart, as some of the characters move from our world to the inkworld and come face to face with the fantasy conjured by the mind and writing of Fenoglio who finds his pen continues to create as he lives in his own created world. The story is exciting and holds plenty of suprises and twists. The characters become more developed, and it is interesting how the inkworld characters illustrate a certain fantastical quality that is in line with being made up by Fenoglio. What I found tedious were some of the redundant situations such as Basta and Mortola arriving again at Elinor's and taking everyone captive, etc. We already went through this. I also found that this book had more chapters with little or no action. Even so, it is a worthy ready and enjoyable.
