Book Reviews of Insomnia

Book Review: Insomnia- By Stephen King
Summary: 5 Stars

With Stephen King's wild imagination and loving heart; Insomnia is a book that has blown me away. He is such a great writer that in this book it seems as though he has met these characters personally himself. King also makes the characters come alive as you read so it also gives you the feeling that you have met the characters yourself too.
Stephen King and his crazy but artistic imagination makes me wonder all of the time how he could possibly think of things like this. I also sometimes wonder if he is from some other world where these awkward ideas actually occur. With strange neighbor mood swings, weird dreams, little sleep, bright colors, odd men, and powers; Ralph Roberts, an aged man, falls in love while trying to survive. But, is he the only one that has these "problems". Or is this creepy town of Derry Maine carrying a few unlucky people with the same sights and powers.
Insomnia is a great book to read that keeps you on the edge of your seat and trying to guess what will happen next. Although many times I have made a hypothesis on what will happen next I have ended up being wrong because the book is so mysterious and unpredictable. So, if you are looking for a book that you don't want to put down; then read Insomnia a thriller/ love story that will give you a new view of life and possibly death and maybe a few nightmares.

Book Review: Fascinating, but a little slow and beyond belief
Summary: 3 Stars

My Stephen King virginity was taken by "Insomnia". Subsequently, I think I have a fairly objective view of King and of this novel. Overall, "Insomnia" is entertaining, sometimes surprising, and occassionally thought-provoking. The story, from a "thousand foot view", is intriguing. Nevertheless, as I waded through the details (nearly eight hundred pages of it in the hardback I read), the story would drag at times and boredom would set in. "Insomnia" was a bit too fantastic for my taste; I just didn't buy into parts of it, which left me lukewarm and disinterested. King is definitely a gifted writer-- he is direct and vivid with his words. I find this to be ironic since critics often laud his story telling and tend to be critical of his writing style. With "Insomnia", I believe the reverse to be true. "Insomnia" would have been a great read for me-- instead of just a good one-- if the story was tighter and more realistic. If you are considering "Insomnia" as your first King book, I suggest another choice to start with (My next foray into King will be "The Stand"). As for Long-time King readers, especially those who have read mostly his earlier horror works and want something different, you may find "Insomnia" refreshingly different at the very least, if not great.

Book Review: Lots of fun
Summary: 4 Stars

This book has been spoken of as difficult to get into, boring, and much too long. I thought it was great. I was interested the whole time, and I never found my mind wandering. A considerable amount of the book has no action whatsoever, but the main characters are almost all over the age of 65, and the dialogue is always interesting. There were parts of the book where the senior citizen heroes managed to do some things that seemed a little too physically involved for their age, but it was nothing too far out there. The subject of the auras left me with a lot of questions after I completed the book, but they were just details. The idea of a boy that must be protected because of his role in the future had a bit of a Terminator flavor to it,(okay, a lot), and came up very akwardly and unexpectedly, but it didn't strike me as ripped-off until after I read it, so maybe it doesn't taste of Terminator so strongly after all. The plot seemed to change paths in the middle, kind of like the movie, From Dusk 'Til Dawn, but it was nothing that troubled me much, and I wouldn't expect it to do so to many others, either. When it all came down to appeal of this book, I found I liked it for one reason only: it was entertaining. Not scary, not edge-of-your-seat thrilling, and not terribly gruesome, but a lot of fun to read.

Book Review: Will keep you awake like you had...well...insomnia
Summary: 4 Stars

This is one of my favorite King books from these last few years (along with the Dark Tower series). This was one book that literally kept me up to finish. I love the image of the little men with their scissors cutting the chord and that our "hero" can now see them because he is slipping in that delirium of waking sleep. Or is he just imagining everything. Though the story loses its momentum and focus 2/3's of the way through it is quite interesting as the main characters are extremely fleshed out where you know the pain and agony of the main character - suffering through his own waking hell - unable to refresh himself with even one nights sleep - and why does he keep waking up at that exact same time? I loved the story and the details King came up with on this one. The twisted little dirty man with his bloody scissors was really a visually fleshed out "monster?!?" and a rather perverse one at that. I have not read this book in many years but so much of it still stays with me - from the walks by the airport to the den of blood and bones. An interesting look at the afterlife and what if. Makes me think of the "Men in Yellow" from "Hearts in Atlantis" and like so many of King's books - seems to referance a lot of books that come before and after.

Book Review: "Insomnia" by Stephen King review
Summary: 3 Stars

This novel by Stephen King was written in 1994 in the transitioning stage of king's adolescent style of writing including "It" and "Carrie". To his now more adult style in which he writes. King addresses serious issues in this novel including abortion rights. He takes you into a super natural realm full of evil spirits taking human and animal shapes. The main characters in this story is the protagonist Ralph Roberts, his wife Carolyn and Ralph's easily tempered neighbor Ed Deepneau. The characters in this story are well developed. This 800 paged book can at the beginning be described as...horror comedy but it begins to lack that "fun" deeper in the story. And as a result it turns out not being "fun" enough to be able to carry the reader throughout the whole 800 pages!!! And plus the story tends to be tedious and somewhat repetitive. I guess Stephen King is so well known for his twisted, descriptive and suspensefull writings that this just had'nt been one of them. Especially when compared to other classics like "The Stand" or "Dark Tower." I'd reccomend skipping this novel there are much better ones worth the time but if you are patient and you've got the time and you don't mind slow and repetitive stories this would be one for you.
