Book Reviews of InsomniacBook Review: More Thanks To Gayle Greene Summary: 5 Stars
Finally, research that supports the "truths" about insomnia. I am a lifetime sufferer and I took copious notes. Other reviewers have nicely summarized the author's helpful hints, her empowering research, the validation readers will get from reading this book and the interesting and easy read the author has accomplished. I want to add two things. First, I finally have a VOCABULARY and a language to use when discussing my affliction. For example: broken sleep-switch, a defect in the sleep system, need for a paradigm shift, cumulative effects of disturbed sleep, ratcheting up. Second, the reality that other people have insomnia as seriously or even more seriously than I do amazed me. I have achieved a better level of acceptance just knowing this. What a gift this science and this validation have been to me. I wish this book had been available years ago when I first starting trying to "find the cure."
Book Review: Finally someone put into words the public & private impact of living with chronic, long term insomnia Summary: 5 Stars
It's as though someone finally got it! I've been trying to explain to doctors for years how this problem impacts my life. Looking for solutions, or even interest from the medical community has been impossible. The impression that they just don't care about my suffering was not always accurate. I now realize that there are few options for doctors to choose from to help a patient overcome sleep disorders. I know one thing though... the more we talk about it in an eloquent and coherent way the way Gayle Greene has done, the more people will listen and take the problem seriously. I wonder how many health problems could be averted if only people were able to get restorative sleep. This is a health crisis and the medical and research communities need to step up to the challenges and look for solutions for the sake of public health.
Book Review: Well-Meaning but Flawed By Faulty Assumptions Summary: 2 Stars
Gayle Greene certainly deserves our sympathy as she struggles with this debilitating illness. However, it is apparent that she begins with certain preconceptions. For example, she fervently believes in a physical or biological origin of insomnia, which may or may not be the case, but it colors the way she approaches her subject. As the saying goes, when you own a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail. Most researchers agree that insomnia almost always has a psychological AND a physical component. If you emphasize one and ignore the other, you are making a potentially serious error. A much better book is Dr. Barry Krakow's "Sound Sleep, Sound Mind" which delves into the subject from a much more informed and knowledgeable perspective, and might actually help people with the disease.
Book Review: This book is much needed and long overdue Summary: 5 Stars
I am so glad I found this book. This book is practical, informative, and gives a voice to insomniacs. The research in this book is very thorough, and the personal perspective balances out scientific information with human experience. I have been disappointed and frustrated with the medical community's treatment of insomnia, and it was such a relief to read that I am not the only one. In fact, we learn from this book how this a fundamental barrier to effectively researching and treating insomnia.
As an insomniac, this book has helped me tremendously. I recommend it for anyone suffering from insomnia, as well as anyone who knows someone with insomnia, or anyone interested in the fascinating subject of sleep.
Book Review: Finally, someone has put a "Voice" to Insomnia. Summary: 5 Stars
As someone who has suffered her whole life, Gayle Greene asks all the right people, all the right questions. She not only asks, but challenges the medical community to find causal reasons for this awful affliction. She covers sleep history to the time of industrialization when the way we sleep changed dramatically. She looks at cross-cultural sleepers to see if they fare any better. From sleep clinics, traditional and alternative medicine, yearly sleep conventions and interviews, Gayle has left no stone unturned. As any one with a chronic health condition, we all have to do our own research before we even go into a Dr.s office in this day and age of medicine. Thanks Gayle for doing that for us. Your words ring true.
