Book Reviews of InsomniacBook Review: Super detailed, excellently researched Summary: 5 Stars
As a researcher who studies the genetics of sleep, I found this to be an excellent, accurate, and at times blistering account of the state of the sleep field from a non-expert's point of view. Her research is excellent and her perspective is an important addition to the field. While some sections could have used heavier editing to cut down on repetitive elements, overall it is a lucid read. The author nails the cultural and intellectual problems that plague much of the current sleep research. This is a must read for people in the field, and her notes are a great starting point for any student seeking important classical articles in sleep research.
Book Review: Best book ever written on Insomnia Summary: 5 Stars
This is the most thorough book on insomnia I have ever read. And I have read a lot of them. I have been insomniac all my life, since birth. (Genetic--like my mom).
You will find in this book a lot about genetic causes, and everything else you want to know, all the latest science. It's a very empowering book. It tells you things you can do for yourself that the doctors don't know. It's easy to read and even funny in places.
The nightmarish life we insomniacs live each night seems less nightmarish with this book. Thanks to this book I don't feel so alone.
Book Review: indispensible Summary: 5 Stars
For anyone experiencing sleep difficulties, reading this book is an INDISPENSIBLE first step. The chapters on the biology and physiology of sleep systems, the information on the drug oligarchy's knockout pills masking as sleeping pills, the games clinicians play-- especially putting "depression" before insomnia....
it's all here, in well organized and engaging presentation.
If there is anything that is missing from this book, the reader will have a pretty good idea of where to go for further informaton.
Book Review: A good help Summary: 5 Stars
A good help for people with this affliction. It is difficult to find a solution to this problem, usually a mix of several things can help. In my case, a change in diet and practicing relaxing exercises have worked. This is a very informative book, but I also recommend gentle exercises and slow breathing, for example the ones taught in "The Secret Art of Seamm-Jasani", by Asanaro which have been very useful for me.
A human approach to a medical condition with excellent suggestions.
Book Review: Anecdotal Comments About Sleep Summary: 1 Stars
This is a 300 page , 50 page book. The continous repeating of the same anecdotal comments about an insomniac soon leaves the reader wondering what is being said.
The call for more research and a list of suggested research topics would have been sufficient and taken only a few pages.
See Jim Horne's review in Nature, which I thought was overly generous.
