Book Reviews of Inspired By . . . The Bible Experience: The Complete Bible: A Dramatic Audio Bible Performed by 400 of Today's Biggest StarsBook Review: Modern Dramatization at it's best Summary: 4 Stars
I own this audio Bible and the Word of Promise. I enjoy them both, but I prefer the Word of Promise for various reasons. However, The Bible Experience is an excellent production in it's own right.
Some things I didn't like:
The music isn't one of the high points of this production. Techno, rock, and progressive music play while scripture is being performed. Also, the OT sound effects throughout the books of the prophets are ridiculous. Anytime a lion is mentioned, you can hear a growling sound in the background. I didn't see the point of this as it doesn't add anything to the listening experience. Also, they don't pronounce Biblical names correctly. The narrator will say it correctly, but then an actor will say it completely different. This is very noticeable in the OT. I'm not crazy about the TNIV, because IMO, it's watered down. Not that it's inaccurate, but I could live without some of the modern language. I just think the Bible should have an authentic feel to it. This is just my personal preference.
The performance of Forest Whitaker: He does a very sloppy job of playing Moses in the BE. He seems uninterested and detached. He's a talented actor, but it doesn't show here.
The portrayal of Laban: Not sure who played this role, but it was terrible. Honestly, I'm not sure how this slipped past production. His voice is fine, but he pauses unnecessarily. He also speaks very slowly.
LL Cool J as Samson: He tries to sound cool throughout the entire performance. Personally, I couldn't take him seriously.
Kirk Franklin as Peter: I like Kirk Franklin. IMO, he's one of the best songwriters in the business. He should definitely stick to writing and singing, because he's not much of an actor. He never really displays much emotion, but it's not all bad. I did enjoy the sermon on the day of Pentecost.
Some things I like:
Some of the advantages to TBE is the fantastic acting and background noise. The b.g.n. can be overdone at times, but when used properly, it adds to the experience. For instance, when Jesus is speaking, you can hear the crowd speaking in the background. I love this feature, but it's not for everyone, as some might find it distracting. While I'm not crazy about the version selected, I have to admit that it is fun to listen to. The actors don't have to struggle with difficult readings like they do in the WOP. I also enjoyed the creativity. Some of the Psalms were sung and Deborah breaks out and starts preaching in the book of Judges.
Blair Underwood as Jesus: His voice is fantastic for the role and you never get bored of listening to his rich baritone voice throughout the Gospels.
Levar Burton as John: I love the way that he reads with so much emotion. He's got a fantastic voice and he really put a lot into his performance.
Pastor Paul Adafasarin? (Don't know how to spell the name) as the voice of God: His deep, booming voice was perfect for this role. He's interesting to listen to, which is good, considering the fact that he speaks throughout most of the Old Testament.
Matt Gibson as the Narrator: Great choice for narrator. Incredible voice, and his performance is almost flawless. The only problem that I have with him is the occasional mispronunciation of a name. Doesn't happen too often though, so it is easily overlooked.
Overall, this is a fantastic audio Bible that is easily accessible. If you're on the fence, you should go ahead and take the leap. I enjoy this audio production and I believe you will too.
P.S. At first, I didn't understand why this product had to include an all black cast, but after reading an interview with Kyle Bowser (the projects producer), I understand why it was so necessary. I believe previous audio Bible's have lacked any kind of racial diversity, for whatever reason. White people all over the globe should take notice of this project. I am a white male, but I agree with Mr. Bowser that it's about time we stop discriminating in the religious world. This project proves that black people should have been included in the making of audio Bible's a long time ago. Carl Amari took notice and used a diverse cast in the Word of Promise. I pray that this continues.
