Book Reviews of Intern: A Doctor's Initiation

Book Review: Courageous and entertaining
Summary: 5 Stars

There are a flurry of medical experience books coming to the fore currently, probably due to our failing healthcare system and the innate curiosity of the public as to how we got here; and let's face it doctor programs and books intrigue us.
I bought this book as it had had good reviews. I have to admit I had my doubts. Those doubts are now erased. Sandeep Jauhar kept amazing journals of his trials of internship and residency.( I personally attempted to do the same, but was so overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work that I was in survival mode the majority of the time.) I am very happy he did. While he wrote this book in 2008 long after he experienced his internship, he relates his experience as freshly as if it was yesterday.
He begins his journey as a fresh PhD in physics, no mean feat, realizing that this isn't what he wants to do with the rest of his life. He applies to medical school gets accepted and short tracks into an internal medicine residency. He relates his experience as an intern. This book is far different than most in its blatant honesty and in the deep intimacy of the experience Jauhar brings to us. He confides what most physicians hide in silence and bravado. "I felt like an actor about to take on a role he was ill-equipped to play."
"I feared I was about to lose something , but I couldn't pinpoint what it was."
Not only does he reveal his own process, but he holds the mirror courageously for the rest of us to see ourselves and how this culture of medicine has inadvertently but inexorably dehumanized the profession.
"Ward life as an intern was a constant juggle of competing tasks. You could be speaking to an attending when a nurse would interrupt and tell you the blood test you had ordered for that morning somehow got overlooked, and now you had to draw it yourself, and oh, by the way, the patient has kidney failure and the last serum potassium was at a life threatening level, so you had better hurry up before the patient has a cardiac arrest. It was hard to develop perspective because everything seemed equally necessary."
This book is a must read for physician and non-physician. It is educational, thought provoking and entertaining. Other worthwhile reads in this category are The House of God: The Classic Novel of Life and Death in an American Hospitaland Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance.

Summary of Intern: A Doctor's Initiation

Intern is Dr. Sandeep Jauhar?s story of his days and nights in residency at a busy hospital in New York City, a trial that led him to question his every assumption about medical care today. Residency?and especially its first year, the internship?is legendary for its brutality, and Jauhar?s experience was even more harrowing than most. He switched from physics to medicine in order to follow a more humane calling?only to find that his new profession often had little regard for patients? concerns. He struggled to find a place among squadrons of cocky residents and doctors. He challenged the practices of the internship in The New York Times, attracting the suspicions of the medical bureaucracy. Then, suddenly stricken, he became a patient himself?and came to see that today?s high-tech, high-pressure medicine can be a humane science after all.
Jauhar?s beautifully written memoir explains the inner workings of modern medicine with rare candor and insight.
