Book Reviews of Island of the Blue DolphinsBook Review: Island of the Blue Dolphins Summary: 4 Stars
I have recently read a wonderful book which was called Island of the Blue Dolphins; it was written by Scott O'Dell. This book was about a tribe, and especially a young gallant irl named Karana, who lived on an island near Catalina. Karana's father is the chief of the tribe. She has an older sister named Ulape and a younger brother named Ramo. One day a large ship comes to the island from Russia to hunt for otter. The captain of the ship, Capt. Orlov, had asked Karana's father if he and his men could camp on the island while they hunted for otter. The chief said yes but only if they give the tribe half of what they killed. When the Russians started leaving for there journey across the seas, Captain Orlov said that he wouldn't give the tribe any of otter. Thus, a small battle began. Though it only lasted about 10 minutes, many of the men from the tribe had been killed from this bellicose frenzy. One of the men who died was Karana's father. That night a new chief was chosen. His name was Kimki. For the next year the tribe had to work twice as hard because of the loss of men, but they continued to make ends meet. One day Kimki told the people of the tribe that he was going to a far off country to find a new place for the tribe, and he would return when he has found the place for the tribe. Kimki did not return from expedition. Once a new chief was chosen, the tribe kept a careful eye on the water and waited for the Russians return. One day a white sailed ship came to the island. The people from the ship told the new chief that Kimki has asked them to take the tribe to the far off country from which they came from. Soon the whole tribe was ready to leave-all except Ramo. He went back to go fetch his fishing spear. Karana had asked if Ramo was already aboard and the men said yes, but as they were leaving, Karana saw her brother still on the beach. As a result of this, Karana jumps into the water and swims all the way back to her brother. Now, together they have to learn how to survive together, being alone. As they survive on the island, Ramo gets attacked by wild dogs, and dies, and now Karana is alone. She is now determined to kill the dog that killed her little brother, but instead she keeps him. Besides the wild dog, which she named Rontu, she had two black birds, a seagull and a seal. I thought that this book was one of the best I've ever read. I think that you will enjoy it to!
Book Review: The Island of the Blue Dolphins Summary: 5 Stars
The Island of the Blue Dolphins By: Scott O'Dell September 20, 2002 The Island of the Blue Dolphins was one of the best books I read! It had had excitement in it, some action, and a lot of adventure. This story takes place on a island near California. There is a girl named Karana who lives with her tribe including her brother, sister, and father who was chief of the tribe. Karana was a girl that liked adventure. Her brother also like adventure but he like action too. Their father was a man that liked peace and fairness. My favorite character in this book is Karana. She is my favorite because she brave and adventurous. She also loves to help and care for animals. I liked this book a lot. It had a lot of interesting parts in it, and the author , Scott O' Dell, made it very detailed and desciptive so it was easy to understand. I think Scott O'Dell's purpose for writing this book was to show how the indians had to live. I also think he wants the readers to learn how they survived a long time ago. He also wanted the readers to learn that the indians didn't like the white men because they killed animals. There are a lot of important events in this book. One of my favorites was in the beginning of the book. It started when Karana saw a big ship coming to the island that day. Finally when it got to shore the people from the boat started talking to her father. She soon learned that they were Aluets and they came to hunt otter. The captain said that he would give one part to the chief and then the Aluets would get the other 2 parts. They all started fighting and many men died including Karana's father. When the Aluets left they left behind nine chests of beads. My favorite quote in this book was "Dolphins rose out of the sea and swam before the ship." I liked it because it was at the end of the book and added to the happy ending. I thought this was a great book! I liked it because it had a lot of adventure and also because Karana had to live alone for many years on the island and even break some rules. The type of reader that would like this book would have to like Historical-Fiction and a lot of adventure. I would recommened this book because it is fun, adventurous, and it is a hard book to put down!
Book Review: surviving in the wild Summary: 5 Stars
Book: Island of the Blue Dolphins
Author: Scott O'Dell
Publisher: A twelve-year-old student at Cutchogue east elementary school in Cutchogue, NY
Imagine that you are an 11-year-old girl hiding in the bushes and watching all of your soldiers die. Envision Russian fishermen leaving a chest thinking there were no survivors. Well Karana experienced this. She and a few others in her tribe were left watching the Russians ship leave the island.
Karana who is the main character is pretty and broad. She is courageous in this wild adventure.
Karana's father who was the leader of their clan on The Island of the Blue Dolphins died in battle. An old elder named Kimki was assigned the new leader. He knew that there was an island to the west and he took a canoe filled with resources to get help from afar. The people on the Island of the Blue Dolphins knew that Kimki would take long before he would come back. They made a new leader and waited. One day they saw a ship with white sails and hid. The ship had come to pick them up Kimki had sent them. It was a rough day and they had to leave soon. They boarded what they thought was everybody, but Karana saw her little brother on the beach. She jumped off, swam to him, and comforted him. The ship said they would come back. But soon misery will strike Karana what would cause such a thing? It is the beginning of many ordeals.
An incident in this story is when Karana falls asleep in her canoe. When she woke up a tidal wave was going to hit the island. Karana was grabbing onto a cliff on two short little ledges. Will she survive this? Will she be washed away forever?
This is a breathtaking book. Once you start it you will not want to put it down! This book is uplifting at some points and at other points you feel like you're going to shed tears.
This books theme is that if you have to survive in the wild you can adapt and learn to survive.
Karana learned how to survive in the wild in this bone chilling adventure. She risked the chance of getting curses from her gods and made weapons. How will Karana survive? Will she get off the island? If you want to read a good realistic fiction book read, Island of the Blue Dolphins but Scott O'Dell.
Book Review: Surviving Summary: 4 Stars
Surviving
So I guess you want to hear everything about the awesome book Island of the Blue Dolphins. Ok, I guess that is cool. So the really good Newbery winning book is written by Scott O'Dell. Some more books he has written are Captive, Black Pearl, and King Fifth. By the way this book is not too long, its only 183 pages. In this well written book, the most un trusty people come, the Aleuts. Since these peeps come they don't do what they promise, so a war breaks out and many people die. So then people come and take everyone except the girl and her brother Ramo, who then dies. So as seasons pass she has to survive all own. Will she survive or die in the most horrible painful death?
In the book Island of the Blue Dolphins, I didn't like that it was so sad. Though the characters were well put together. The part that sad were when the Aleuts came, and didn't live up to there deal and war broke out. Also the setting was good but then again not when Ramo died. Yet, one of the most disappointing parts was when she had to survive all alone, but their were mostly happy and fun parts
In some chapters it was awesome cliff hangers! Once it said "good fortune would soon bring trouble to Ghalas-at." I mean what's not to love about that. It makes you not want to stop reading, also when she spoke about being ready to go to a cave of wild dogs. See doesn't that draw you in, just to see if she does it! Also the ending was unbelievable, but of course I don't want to ruin. For the book Island of the Blue Dolphins, I totally recommend it for any 5th or 6th graders. Also it was completely divine, so READ IT! My opinion, I stick by is a good book and it was enjoyable to read. Also since it was somewhat suspenseful, it made it fun to read. So I recommend it.
Book Review: Awsome Book! Summary: 5 Stars
I am a 7th grade middle school student at Kopachuck Middle School. I enjoyed this book very much. I think one of the key reasons I enjoyed this book so much is because of the way Scott O'Dell decided to write from Karana's point of view. Karana's amazing adventure to survive on the island she was born and raised on was fascinating to me. Karana and her village were going to be taken to another island on a large ship, But as the ship is leaving the shore and is out at sea Karana can't find her younger brother Ramo any were. She looks to the shore and there he is running along the cliff with his fishing spear in hand. She tries to get the ship to return to shore but it won't because of strong winds. She dives from the ship and swims to shore. The ship leaves with out them. Tragedy strikes on the first night they are left alone on the island. Ramo, while off exploring is attacked and killed by a pack of wild dogs. Karana happens to see the face and eyes of the pack leader, she will remember them always. Karana, now alone on the island has to survive until the ship returns, if it ever does. While on the island she has to hunt for food and keep it away from the pack of wild dogs still roaming the hills. She builds a new shelter and creates weapons from the materials around her. One of the most surprising elements of the story is when Karana befriends the leader of the wild dogs and calls him Rontu. Rontu soon becomes Karana's best friend. He lives with and protects her. For a long while Rontu and Karana hunted together. Then one day Rontu and Karana were testing a canoe and exploring caves when they came upon a "devilfish". A devilfish is an octopus or squid. For many days they hunted it. Then they killed it. They had many adventures together. There are more surprises in the book. There were a lot of tragedies in this story, but I think that is what made this story so fascinating and it always had me at the edge of my seat. This book is the first of Scott O'Dell's books that I have read. Every time I read it, it still keeps me drawn in to the story. This is probably my favorite book. Review by Nikki
