It's Not Easy Being Mean
By: Lisi Harrison
The book I read is called "It's Not Easy Being Mean", by: Lisi Harrison. This book was about an incredibly wealthy, snobby, popular girl named Massie Block. She leads a group of friends named: Alicia Rivera, Kristen Gregory, Dylan Marvil, and the newbie Claire Lyons. This group is called "The Pretty Committee". They have all been expelled from their prestigious private school Octavian Country Day School (OCD). They are accepted back in, though. Now they get an envelope from the 8th grade alpha--Skye Hamilton. It contains a DVD that tells about the "mythical" key that unlocks "paradise"--an old forgotten room. Massie thinks that Skye will just pass the key down as tradition tells, instead Skye has hidden the key under a Briarwood (OCD's sister school) boys' mattress, which Skye has kissed. This will be hard because Skye has kissed most of them. Even worse the Pretty Committee is not the only girls who have gotten the DVD, which will mean a little competition.
This book was not really thrillingly exciting. It wasn't super exciting because it was kind of predictable in some parts. For example when Claire had an audition for a movie it was obvious that she was going to get the part because that is what always happens in books with a "happily ever after" ending.
Looking at the Pretty Committee as a whole they weren't really realistic (excluding Claire Lyons). I mean seriously, they wear designer brand clothing and they're only twelve. They also use full make up pretty much everyday. That includes blush, lipstick, lip liner, eye shadow, mascara, and eyeliner. That is a little too much for twelve year olds. The Pretty Committee's (including Claire's) feelings are very, very insecure (when they are not in public). They are all afraid that if they do one thing wrong that Massie will kick them out of the Pretty Committee forever. They also all worry that their crushes and boyfriends will suddenly just dump them. These are very normal feelings to have at that age. I absolutely despised the ending. It was way too abrupt. They don't explain anything, which makes me mad because I have to wait about 5 months until I will be able to find out.
Next, I am going to discuss the author and her writing style. Lisi Harrison, the author has a very good description, especially of the outfits. For example "-Denim vintage-inspired, shrunken Polo blazer with a navy silk tank and a faded Hudson jean skirt over navy stretch pants. A chocolate-brown belt and matching suede ankle boots-" With this terrific description I know exactly what Alicia is wearing. Lisi Harrison also has awesome dialogue. As you may already know the Pretty Committee (excluding Claire) are incredibly wealthy. The way they talk also reflects upon their personality. They talk very snootily and they kind of have their own Pretty Committee dialect. For example Claire's name is spoken like this: "Kuh-laire." They say please: "Puh-lease" and they say Oh My God "Ehmagawd!" A dissapointment was the whole idea of the book. It was kind of a stupid idea because the clique girls always get what they want so it was predictable who got what.
This book was very good. I like the idea that Lisi Harrison branched out. She usually would do something that was a big deal to the Clique girls, but a little deal to the readers. For example in Revenge of the Wannabes Alicia decides to have her own sleepover and not go to Massie's. However, in this book she did something that was a little weird. She basically had a scavenger hunt for the Clique to find the key that would lead them to "paradise" in 8th grade.
I have a very specific recommendation. No boys would ever find this book interesting because there are girly ideas. Also girls that are tomboys and like more adventurous books would not like this book because all the girls in the Pretty Committee are girlie and care only about their wardrobes.
To conclude, this book was very enjoyable. There were some parts that were boring and other parts that seemed ridiculous. Although it still was good. This would be a book that any girl would like.
Summary of It's Not Easy Being Mean (Clique Series)Massie Block: Getting back into Octavian Country Day was a piece of sugar-free cake, compared to Massie's next goal-finding the key that unlocks an ah-mazing legendary secret room at OCD! Alpha eighth grader Skye Hamilton and her clique have stashed the key in the bedroom of one mystery Briarwood boy, but who? Whoever finds the key gets access to the secret room for an entire year and the prestige that comes along with it. But what happens when LBR Layne seems to be getting closer? This is way more than a matter of life or death, it's a matter of in or out!
Kristen Gregory: Always been a star on the soccer field, but her style gets majorly cramped when her friends are forced to join the team. They better start kicking those soccer balls or Kristen's going to start kicking some . . . !
Alicia Rivera: Uses her skills as a gossip reporter to scheme her way into the rooms of all the Briarwood hotties!
Dylan Marvil: Heard depression makes people lose weight. Is hoping for some sad news soon because she's popping donut holes the way some people pop Tic-Tacs.
Claire Lyons: Being famous isn't all it's cracked up to be! Her agent confiscates her gummies, and forces her to do some very bad things to make her more "edgy." Worst of all, her constant meetings with lawyers and movie execs are eating into her time with the P.C. and with Cam! Is being a Hollywood starlet worth the Gucci-high price tag?
