Book Reviews of JavaScript: The Definitive Guide

Book Review: Always Within Reach
Summary: 5 Stars

This is THE reference book for JavaScript. I go to it when I have a question about how something works or how to do something. It has a detailed index, which is always important to me because I rarely want to read a chapter when I'm looking for something specific.

I've owned two previous editions, and when I replaced them, they were each well-worn and dog-eared.

I recommend this to anyone who finds themselves in the world of JavaScript.

Book Review: Good information, horrible index
Summary: 3 Stars

Good information. Lowering from 4 stars to 3 because of its bad index. When I try to look something up, I'm usually taken to a page that mentions the term in passing - it takes a few tries before I find *the* page describing the term. Plus, it doesn't include the page number of the term in the API-reference appendix.

Obviously a computer-generated index - get a professional indexer next time! A good index would make this book more useful.

Book Review: And it's only $32? Wow.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book because I wanted to learn JavaScript, and it is doing just that!!! There is so much stuff packed into this book that it is amazing, and I can't believe I only payed $32 for it! It covers everything you need to know. It goes into more detail about JavaScript than any book on any other language I have seen. And all the pages are not little flashy examples. It is a real reference for those who are serious about learning JS.

Book Review: Really good book
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is highly readable and helped me understand client side scripting. As a long time server side scripter (php mostly), client side scripting was largely foreign to me, until after reading this book. Its full of useful examples and is clear on the difference between the true "standards" way of doing things, and what is required to make things work in non-standards compliant browsers. Oh, and Yes, the latest edition covers AJAX.

Book Review: it's the sacred scripture of Javascript
Summary: 5 Stars

Although you can always find snippets of Javascript online, sometimes you need to sit down with a paper book and read up on the whole schlemiel. This is THE essential reference for everything Javascript, which makes it important if exploring Ajax. It can be overwhelming for beginners, but it has a great index, and it won't be long before you're jumping here and there to get the real scoop on Javascript.
