Book Reviews of Jelly Roll QuiltsBook Review: Nice book, BUT........ Summary: 3 Stars
I'm an experienced quilter, and teach new quilters, so I'm always on the lookout for a book I can confidently recommend. The patterns are easy to follow, but unless you know what you are doing, you're going to run into trouble. So far, I've only tried the Garden Trellis pattern. I followed the instructions to sew the tube, and came to the point where I had to cut the triangles. The instructions were very explicit on lining the template up on the seams, but did not point out that the triangle template needed to be lined up 1/4" down the tube, not at the end or your blocks would come out too small....something I should have known to do, but totally missed it my first time around. Also something a beginner would have no clue about.
None of the patterns give fabric requirements for backing fabric. Unless you know how to calculate the yardage for the backing, and how to piece a backing, a beginner will be extremely frustrated. Backing is totally missing from the General Techniques section in the back of the book.
My recommendation.....Go for it! ....but be very mindful of the minute details, and DON'T FORGET TO BUY THE BACKING!!!
Book Review: Abundant Source of Patterns for 2-1/2" Fabric Strips Summary: 5 Stars
Pam & Nicky have compiled a lovely assortment of fresh quilt patterns to utilize jelly rolls. Most patterns are for quilts about twin-bed size, (you can easily adapt by adding or subtracting blocks), with an eye on traditional- feel quilt designs.
Clear directions for piecing your strips, accompanied by great color pictures in each quilts' directions, are easy to follow. I especially appreciate these British designers converting meter measurements to inches for us to calculate our background and border fabric requirements :-)
Many of the quilts are shown in two color ways, to help inspire us to visualize our own jelly roll assortments for the patterns. I'm cutting strips from my stash to make my own custom jelly rolls...I like so many of the patterns in this book, that I've already begun piecing a Christmas rendition of "nine-patch wonder" from stash fabrics.
I have been quilting for almost 20 years, and I have found several more designs in this book that I hope to make in the near future...I highly recommend "jelly roll quits" for strip quilters of any and all levels!
Book Review: One of my favorite quilt pattern books Summary: 5 Stars
I buy dozens of quilting books every year - after a while, they started to look the same.
This book does not - it has beautiful pictures and clear, detailed directions and patterns.
I want to make most of the quilts it contains - the designs and fabric choices are fresh and interesting and distinctive. The authors have a clear point of view which will appeal to a lot of different kinds of people.
The one thing that I don't like about Pam and Nicky's quilts is that they advise leaving the corners of the original rectangle of fabric in place when making "flip-n-stitch" style flying geese units. (or any unit which is made by sewing an HST diagonal across corners of a square or rectangle.)
While this method does create a *little* more stability for the unit, the shadowing of the main fabric through the half-square-triangle is distracting and unattractive. I would recommend trimming away that excess fabric.
Other than this one little point, I love their books and designs!
Book Review: great instructions and very inspiring Summary: 4 Stars
I received this book for Christmas and have been quite pleased with it thus far. I've already made 2 quilts from it, and I have plans to make quite a few more. Two things that are great about this book: 1) For almost all of the quilts, you only need one jelly roll to make the quilt as pictured + some extra fabric for binding, borders, filler, etc. 2) The directions are much clearer, easier to understand, and more fully explained in this book than they are in other quilt books dealing with Moda pre-cuts. Admittedly, some of the photos are a little blurry, but the benefits of this book far outweigh its flaws.
Overall, definitely worth the investment!! I would strongly recommend this title to anyone who enjoys working with Moda Pre-Cuts.
Book Review: This book is a continual sell-out! Summary: 5 Stars
Jelly Roll Quilts is a continual sell-out at our local quilt stores. The quilt designs are absolutely beautiful. It is hard to determine which quilt to make first! Featured quilts are done in a variety of styles- from tradtional to contemporay. The quiltmaker can purchase her jelly roll fabrics which speeds the quilt-making process or cut them from her stash which is a great way to deplete the stash. To enlarge the quilt size simply add more strips or jelly roll fabrics. We are in the process of starting a "Jelly Roll Club" at one of the quilt stores and this book is a must-have!
