Book Review: Cool paranormal world, but only so-so hero/heroine had good sex and lousy romance

Plot Summary: In this new take on the story of Atlantis, the gods banished dragons, vampires, demons, and a host of other creatures to live in the sunken city. A government agency has discovered a portal into Atlantis, and they send agent Gray James to recover a powerful tool called the Jewel of Dunamis. Gray meets a slave woman whose gift of prophesy makes her the most wanted person in Atlantis. Slowly Gray realizes that she is the Jewel, and he vacillates on whether they have a future together in between making love and fighting off bad guys.
This is very much a "Me Tarzan, You Jane" type of story, where the hero is a possessive alpha brute who constantly has to rescue his damsel-in-distress. I'm not passing judgment on the characterization, since it's really a matter of taste whether you're in the mood for a cream pie or chocolate cake. This particular rendering is just okay, since the romantic tension was just about nil. Showalter does not disappoint in the sex scenes, but the romance was as weak as a newborn babe.
I had a couple issues with both Gray and Jewel. I wasn't too happy with Gray for taking Jewel's virginity while knowing full well that he couldn't take her back home. He made one of those `it's going to happen so I should stop fighting it' rationalizations, with no thought to how devastated Jewel would feel once he bedded her and left town. By the way, the cover shows a ripped guy with black hair, and Gray is supposed to be a pale blond guy with gray eyes. It's a pet peeve of mine when the cover art doesn't match the hero's physical description.
Jewel pretty much throws herself at Gray from the get go, which is plausible within the story construct, but it doesn't create interesting relationship fodder. Unfortunately, she's nothing more than a nubile, weak, defenseless woman who is innocent and ignorant like a child. The action is relentless, and after every love scene, they have to face some kind of attack, so I can't say I was bored, but not liking the characters really hampered my full enjoyment of the story. The paranormal world was detailed and interesting, and it's a big part of the reason I'm giving this an okay rating instead of a pan.
