Book Reviews of John Shaw's Nature Photography Field GuideBook Review: Great pictures, not-so-useful information Summary: 1 Stars
I love John Shaw's pictures (they're very inspiring!). However, I didn't find the book useful. Subscribe to a decent forum on the web, and you'll find more relevant, up to date and detailed information than what's found in this book. Check out wikipedia, or g**gle any question you may have. Don't spend your money on this one or on Shaw's Lanscape Photography.
If you want to learn nature composition check out this one: The Art of Photographing Nature by Martha Hill (Author), Art Wolfe (Photographer). That one is a timeless book for budding photographers.
Book Review: A very comprehensive book on photography. Summary: 5 Stars
This is more than just another book on nature photography. It is a solid guide on the equipment and knowledge required for photography in general. The information is easily understandable, yet provides much more depth than is usually found in how to books. This is a good solid course in 35mm photography, with an emphasis on nature. I have also read his close-up book, his landscape book, and his "Focus On Nature". The scope of this book is so broad, you will not need those others. If you only buy one book on outdoor photography, this should be the one.
Book Review: Creative and Mathematical Summary: 5 Stars
This book is the best I have read. It reviews the basics to get you up to speed, and then dedicates a good ammount of time to the sicence and art of what YOU call a good exposure. The author effectively relates f-stops, shutter speed, and film speed in the math of stops. He also goes into how your camera sees the world by default (18% grey) and teaches you how to alter that default setting to what your subject really is using TTL metering. I shot full manual at Death Valley this summer, and my first ENTIRE roll of expsures (Fuji Velvia) was DEAD ON!!!
Book Review: A true master! Summary: 4 Stars
John Shaw is truely one of the 'Masters' in nature photography and he imparts some of his knowledge here for us. This is invaluable information for all who yearn to take better landscape or any type of nature pictures. If you want to take your nature photography to the next level you need John Shaw to instruct you. The only thing I would change is to update it to the ditigal world. However, it is still, dollar for dollar, the best bargain you'll get on the subject from one of the 'Masters'. And if you're still shooting film, you'll be delighted, too!
Book Review: An easy to follow book on all the details Summary: 5 Stars
I found this book to be great for me. I am new to photography but have been an avid amateur for about two years. Being a detail person, this book is the sixth one that I read but it is by far the best.John Shaw makes it all clear and doesn't use the buzz words that you will not understand. If he does use technical jargon, he explains it completely. If you like outdoor photography the book is a must. Otherwise it is a good (no great) book on the basics from exposure to lighting to equipment to common problems. Don't miss this one.
