Book Reviews of John Shaw's Nature Photography Field GuideBook Review: Written before digital Summary: 3 Stars
This must have been a very good book for beginners ten years ago. Detailed text and good photos. However, with the advent of digital a lot of the text is no longer useful. Sure some things can be translated, but hey isn't that the author's job? Sure, the pictures are still inspiring and useful. If there's a new version you might consider it. But not this version.
I just bought my first DSLR camera. I bought ten photography books on amazon. I'm evaluating these books from the perspective of a semi-advanced amateur.
Book Review: Inspiring but also packed with info. Summary: 4 Stars
Although it repeats some information found in other books of the same genre/type, it does do an excellent job of explaining the technical details of photography. It's a good book for beginners but I think if you have similar titles, you might find the information repetitive. However, the photos themselves are worth the price of the book alone and they help inspire you to achieve higher even if you think you know all that the book tries to explain. Clearly written, excellent photos make this one of my favorite books.
Book Review: Simply the best Summary: 5 Stars
After reading several other books on nature photography, most were good, but this one is without reservation, the very best. Although written for film, most of the book is still valuable for digital photography. I was hooked on the book by the chapter on exposure. His treatment of the subject is clear and simply rang true. It has heped me to think of exposure in ways that have improved my photography significantly.
The book covers a wide range of topics and does so consistently and clearly.
Book Review: Book about gear not photographing technique Summary: 3 Stars
Lion portion of the material is about different Nikon gears author used, covers in details different types of lenses, accessories, filters and flashes, but really very little if any material on photographing technique.
I personally have found "Digital Landscape Photography: In the Footsteps of Ansel Adams and the Masters" by Michael Frye much more useful

Book Review: Excellent book for the budding photographer Summary: 5 Stars
This book is excellent for those dabling in photography who want to improve. His coverage of basic photo techniques is very good. The discussion on exposure is the best I've ever read. The techniques worked perfectly the first time I used them. There is also excellent information on what equipment to buy. Some of it is too expensive for me to buy now, but I can save for the future. In summary, great book, well worth getting, reading and saving for future reference.
