Book Review: Adding Susan Wiggs to my author list
Summary: 4 Stars
"Just Breathe" is the first novel I have read by Susan Wiggs. I often enjoy this type of book, particularly after reading heavier material or when I know that I am going to be needing to pick it up and put it down often and I don't have to think too hard to keep track of whatever is going on in the story. This particular novel was quite a pleasant surprise since I ended up really enjoying it and often found myself reading 80 - 100 pages at a sitting even though that wasn't my plan. It's relatively long (473 pages) but not particularly "dense" and so I moved swiftly through it - similar pace to reading a Debbie Macomber book (another author with the same publishing house who provided a comment on this book).
Sarah Moon is a struggling comic strip writer living in Chicago and married to a man who has completed treatment for cancer. Once the treatment was successful, they began trying to start the family they had always talked about but they are having fertility issues and the opening pages deal with one of her visits to the doctor for treatment. What unfolds in the following pages sets up the rest of the novel and drives the story from there. Susan's marriage doesn't turn out like she thought it would and she ends up returning to her hometown to regroup and get her life together.
After reading this, I will be putting Susan Wiggs on my list for future reads. For this genre, this is really very good and kept my interest. The characters are well fleshed-out, the settings of Chicago and coastal California are well described and add quite a bit to the atmosphere of the story. There were two areas that keep this from being a 5-star rating for me - 1) there is an arson story line that runs throughout the book, the resolution felt flat and tacked on and 2) only the negative traits of the ex-husband are shared with the reader, making it hard to understand what attracted Sarah to him and why things seemed to work for as long as they did. He was just too one-dimensional to be able to buy into her loyalty over the years.
Overall, a fun read that encourages me to try other books by this author.
