Book Review: Great manual for the Trap Bar and every imaginable Shrug.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have Kelso's other book "Power Lifting Basics, Texas Style" and enjoyed the "eccentric" style of the author. I recently bought the original Gerard Trap Bar and wanted to learn as much a possible. This book covers it all and more.

The majority hears the word "Shrug" and imagines the Shoulder Shrug. Kelso' Shrug Book contains many shrug movements that most people have never thought of. Many moves for stabilizers throughout the body. The movements will hit areas that no standard free weight movement would touch. These are great assistant movements for Power Lifting and all around strength.

There is a full chapter dedicated to the Trap Bar which demonstrates moves such as the Overhead Press and High Pull. No real instruction manual comes with the Gerard Trap Bar and this has more info than the few booklets I've seen. It also explains a rational way to shoulder a Trap Bar without the use of a rack.

Paul Kelso is very well versed in different training modalities and is not dogmatic about one over the other. There are different schools of training that publish Test Studies about their methods and all seem to sat that their way is the most scientific. I recommend that each person decides for themselves and keeps safety as well as results in mind. Strength Training should not cause injuries if done properly.

If you are looking for a book that teaches the proper technique of lifts such as the squat and power clean I would suggest "Starting Strength-Basic Barbell Training" by Mark Rippetoe. Kelso's book is not for beginners and it's assumption is that the reader is already well versed in the performance of the basic lifts.

Paul Kelso is very well versed in different training modalities and is not dogmatic about one over the other. The Amazon price is lower than other companies that carry it. I recommend this as well as Kelso's "Power Lifting Basics, Texas Style". It's all about the basics.
