Book Review: Paid full price so I forced myself to finish it

This book was so bad I had to review it. I wasn't going to read others' reviews first but I couldn't help glancing at the first one I saw (dennyvibes). It's amazing how on target it is with what I was thinking and even saying out loud. I think my husband has heard more about this book than the good ones I've read.
I will admit this one grabs you and sucks you right in. I can truthfully say the prologue took my breath away. I made my husband read it right then and there. Between that and paying full price for the book which I never do, I guess that's what pushed me to finish it. I just kept HOPING something would change, a character would get a new dimension, or SOMETHING would happen. I also have to say I skimmed through a lot of the more mundane stuff. And that was a lot of skimming! I usually finish a novel I like in a day or two, but with this one (which I bought on vacation and had three days of downtime plus a 2-hour flight to read) it took me 9 days, even with skimming! And I actually dreaded picking it up each time. I'm not one to force myself to finish a book but I gave it my all based on a general liking of Johansen's novels, based on guilt over paying $8 for a paperback, and based on the prologue which, like I said, was awesome!
Did anyone else wonder when she was going to tell us why Michael's dreams were "killer?" Did she really base the entire premise of her title on sleep apnea??? Did I totally miss something? I kept waiting to find out that something was up with Michael and if his nightmares actually were allowed to finish, they would kill him. But sleep apnea? Come on! That's not the basis for a thriller!
Two other things I wanted to mention.
First, is it me, or was this almost like re-reading "Long After Midnight?" I totally agree her books, at least many of them, have become totally formulated but this one was so close to that one it was scary.
And second, are Iris Johansen's novels starting to read more like romance novels and less like thrillers/intrigue novels? Actually before starting to write this I looked up Johansen's work to get the title of "Long After Midnight" and realized that several of her novels I read a long time ago also read like romances - I guess I didn't realize they were by the same person who wrote the Eve Duncan books. While reading "Killer Dreams," I said out loud "ohhhh, it's a romance! Duh" But is it supposed to be???
I feel guilty tearing her work apart. I realized when looking up her work how many of her novels I've read through the years, so I feel like I owe her something. Ms. Johansen, if you're reading this, please forgive me but if your next book is this wooden and predictable, I think you've lost a fan. Your characters are all starting to blend together in my head - all the woman are the same, all the men are the same. Even the plot lines are starting to repeat. Throw us a loop - make a good guy have a bad side. Make the tough guy not go soft for the strong woman. Make a bad guy have a good side. Throw in a kid who's a normal kid, not some kind of a selfless gallant knight who always takes his mom's best interests to heart over his own. Something! Give us something to make us want to keep reading! The tough guy going soft and the kid who's so good can be heartwarming and enjoyable but not if the reader knows exactly how they are going to act, what they're going to say, and how the book will end.
