Book Reviews of King and KingBook Review: While I am not unsympathetic toward the gay issue... Summary: 3 Stars
I have to say that teaching homosexuality, then again any form of full throttled sexuality whether gay or straight, is not meant to be for either elementary age students or middle school age students. I would be as against this book as I would be against, say, some of the many (sad to say) books that are out there that are teacher and parent resource for teaching "sex" to children. Heck, I'd even disagree with a teaching handing out Playboy magazine to the class, in fact! There are no boundaries toward morality instilled in these books, which is what I am against. Yes I think anyone should be tolerant against others, straight or gay, but within the foundations of a society based upon sound moral judgment (then again, I believe in moral judgment based upon God, not upon man's own "desire to be wise" like so many people out there without God seem to insist).
For me the best resource tool for teaching sexuality for children is found in the Bible, within the framework of Song of Songs. This book teaches true love between man and wife. A love that is not found in a vacuum, but instead, found in a framework of a mature, wise, and Godly, society (i.e. with the example of the brothers of the beloved woman in the SoSs). The book of the Bible also insists upon sexuality based and found within marriage (i.e. waiting until the marriage night to gain the substantial gift of lovemaking, a gift from God who loves us, to us, for man and wife...not boyfriend and girlfriend, not boyfriend and boyfriend, nor girlfriend and girlfriend). There are many other issues at hand that can be learned through the wisdom of this God inspired book of the Bible, but I think you get my point.
Of course, I've looked at the book and I dont think it is necessarily "satanic" in its presentation. I am not here to vilify the book because I wont turn it into some gospel of wickedness. Like I said, I am sympathetic toward homosexual and their cause to a certain extent, but on the ground that it goes against moral teachings of the Bible, I'd have to say that I disagree with the summation of this book. Yes, homosexuals should be treated with respect, and I strive to treat all with respect even if I agree to disagree with them on certain issues. And I will also say that this book DOES have restraint in that it doesn't hammer children with what some might call "political correctness", in fact the book has in its own right a sense of innocent charm about it. Still, the issue that is deals with is an issue that is greater than any issue that should just be jumped into without giving any warning to parents. That is the key issue, at least for me, parents should have a hand...a supporting hand and a disagreeing hand...in how the public school system treats and teaches our children. If a parent or parents privately want the child to read this book to install respect toward others, than fine, if a teacher withholds respect to parents and tries to install his or her "teaching savvy" to the child, then I do have something against the situation.
I think, in the end, that it is the parents job to teach sexuality and tolerance to their children. I will when I have children in the framework of being a man with a wife, be the one that will teach a) abstinence before marriage and b) sexuality with and only with the wife after the marriage and c) tolerance toward those that I will disagree, but still offer the friendship and love out of knowing that that is what God wishes of all Christians to do...show love toward others...even if it is at the fine line of agreeing to disagree with an action.
Bottom Line: If you are a parent and you want to teach your children the lessons learned from this book, fine. I say freedom to you! If you are a teacher and you ant to teach my children the lessons learned from this book and you dont tell me (i.e. as a parent), then I have a problem.
