While the title makes it seem like it would be a nonfiction version of Bridget Jones' Diary, it's deeper than that.
She touches on important, overlooked points on gender, the male-female divide, and how American women are enculturated. I'd even call some of her concepts academic, but the writing style is decidedly informal and upbeat.
She points out things regarding values/perspectives in the Western world that deserve to be pointed out.
Re: body image, she mentions Oprah. She's famous, influentual and inspirational. Her model of success is unprecedented and she's built an empire, but she claims that losing weight has been her greatest achievement. That really IS skewed, but I've not heard anyone else call it out as such.
Re: Homosexuality, she talks about how the Right is so hostile and bible-thumpy about it, yet those same right-wingers don't notice that the bible has "far more numerous and damning prohibitions against adultery than against homosexuality. ...and if we're going to get literal, the bible also says that anyone who curses their father or mother should be put to death."
There's oh so much more (images of women in the media, the ill effect of teaching girls/women to be unfailingly nice, etc) but suffice it to say that if you're at all interested in sociology, gender, or what our culture teaches girls and women, this book is a winner.
