Book Reviews of Kitten's First Full MoonBook Review: Kitten's First Full Moon is Filled with Great Suspense! Summary: 4 Stars
Kevin Henkes really soars to the top of the creativity list with this totally suspense filled book about the adventures of a captivating kitten who first thinks that the moon she sees is a cup of milk. It's her very first full moon and this determined little kitty just won't give up.
This is a full moon story that will capture your child (or group of children) from beginning to end. And who couldn't but fall in love with this persistent little kitten?
Filled with some of the best black and white (charcoal and cream) images I've ever seen, my kids immediately caught on to this extremely creative story about a kitten who just doesn't give up-even when faced with temporary bumps in the road. Frustration, exhaution and even pain don't stop this determined kitten from reaching her goal of getting to that cup of milk. Your kids will see the full moon and be consumed with the kittens determination and spirit. One of the messages that was clear throughout the story was one of courage and the ability to not give in or ever give up-not ever.
This is one cute feline that won't be forgotten and a great book that will both stimulate and relax your childs mind. If other books have failed, please give this one a try. It worked for our family and is so popular now that it's often hard to find in our home. "Where did you put the "Kitten and the Moon Book?".
Happy reading to you and your child or children. And to those who babysit? You'd better add this one to your collection as well!

Book Review: Report and Opinion by a 4th Grade Student Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fun book about a kitten that is not very smart. In the book Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes, Kitten sees her first full moon and thinks it is a bowl of milk. She really wants it, so she tries to get it in many different ways.
At first, Kitten is sitting on the porch and sees the full moon, which she thinks is a big bowl of milk. She wants "the bowl of milk" and starts trying to get it in many different ways. First, she tries licking it, but she only gets a bug. Yuck!!!! Then, she tries to get it by jumping, but tumbles down the porch stairs, bumping her legs, nose, ears, head, and tail on the way down. Second, she tries chasing it over the sidewalk, in the field, and in the garden by the pond. Third, she tries to get it by climbing up a tree, but does not succeed.
From the top of the tree, Kitten sees a big bowl of milk in the middle of the lake (actually, the moon's reflection). Then she jumps in to try and get it, but all that happens is she gets wet. When she went home it was to find a real bowl of milk waiting for her on the porch. YAY!
I enjoyed this book because the pictures were beautiful and the words were small. The pictures were detailed and fit in with the story. I also liked the pictures because they were black and white. The text was great because it was not too much to read. I also enjoyed how naïve the kitten was because she thought the moon was a bowl of milk. I would recommend this book to younger people who like pictures more than letters!!!!!
Book Review: What every Children's book Should Strive to Be Summary: 5 Stars
This book truly has it all! The story takes place at night and goes through a shimmering array of charcoal looking style illustrations that seem to perfectly showcase kitten during his journey of discovery without detracting from the simplicity and sheer determination of a naive baby kitten. You can't help but laugh even as an adult at the adventures this poor, tiny kitten has in his quest for the irresistible bowl of milk (I mean of course kitten thinks the moon is a bowl of milk its her first moon and shes clearly not properly informed about the moon and how it glistens in the sky and obviously beckons to her "come drink me"). She runs, she climbs, she leaps, and even ends up soaking wet in what she thinks is another bowl of milk only to find that in the end everything she wants is waiting for her right on her very own doorstep. I love reading this to my daughter I never get sick of it, this book will absolutely stand the test of time! In fact I was so smitten with this book I've gone on to buy at least five other Kevin Henkes books for my daughter who ironically has a floral name as does most of Henke's mouse characters and their all as equally fantastic as kitten, but in my opinion for a reader with a bigger attention span 2 and a half+. I actually think "Kittens first full moon" would be absolutely amazing as a board book and so I recommend it from birth+.
Book Review: Delightful picture book! Summary: 5 Stars
I had to read this for a class in graduate school and enjoyed the lovely illustrations and simple yet engaging story.
Author/illustrator Henkes' writing is sparse with just enough details to keep the reader and audience interested in what happens next. The story, which centers on the exploits of a kitten, is actually reminiscent of a young child who upon seeing and wanting something, tries her/his best to get it. Young children especially, will relate easily to kitten's feelings of curiosity, determination, and frustration.
Henkes' illustrations are in black and white, yet the lack of color enhances the story. The reader's attention is drawn to the large bold illustrations and keeps one engaged with the flow of the story. Each illustration focuses on Kitten and her attempts to get to the 'bowl of milk', and Henkes employs creative methods to illustrate Kitten's efforts. There are also subtle allusions which may be beyond a young child's comprehension, but will appeal to older children and adults. For example, there is a full page with five panels showing Kitten running towards the moon, but in the last panel, Kitten is shown with a perplexed look on her face, as she is yet to reach the moon/bowl of milk! The concept of distance is well illustrated here, and can be a great talking point with eager young minds.
Book Review: Warm and Fuzzy!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great easy reader for children as young as three to six years old. While reading this book I thought of these questions that parents could ask the child will reading this book. Some of the questions are that families can talk about the moon and imagination also what does the moon look like to you in its different phases? Lastly have you ever seen the man in the moon? After reading this book it really got me thinking about the moon and how awesome it looks at night. Kitten's First Full Moon is very cute because the story ties together a scientific story about the moon and how the kittens first reactions are to it.
Here is a quick summary of this cute book and why it draws you into reading it til the end. Sitting on the stairs, little Kitten sees what she takes to be a small bowl of milk in the night sky, but try as she might, she cannot get to it. She reaches and chases the bowl, but it always eludes her. Climbing up a tree, she sees below what she thinks is an even bigger bowl of milk. Of course, it is the moon and she gets soaking wet when she jumps into its reflection on the water. A real bowl of milk left for her on the porch gives the story a happy ending. This book is awesome and a most read to little ones. :)
