Book Reviews of Kitten's First Full Moon

Book Review: Excellent Book - Especially for Infants
Summary: 5 Stars

This was the first book our twin girls were read. Though a few reviews have mentioned how "dull" it was, due to the black & white, what they don't realize is that black & white is what newborns see best. Our girls could go from fussy to quiet, instantly upon opening this book. In fact, the inside covers, with the white polka dots, was enough to mesmerize them. On top of that, the pictures with the dark backgrounds and white bowls are just what an infant's eyes are drawn to.

I highly recommend this book. You will quickly be able to memorize the story, holding the book for them to see, while telling the story with excitement, adding to the wonder and amazement. My girls are now almost 1, and they still enjoy the book (and I still have it memorized).action of the story and for the kitten, as for the polka dots!

Another recommendation for infants, especially starting around 6 months, is "I Went Walking," by Sue Williams & Julie Vivas. The pictures are colorful and bold, and if you are making some animal noises, will be one of your infant's favorites.......it also can stop our girls from crying almost instantly.

Book Review: Great book for beginning readers!
Summary: 5 Stars

This cute story of a kitten thinking the full moon is a big bowl of milk and her wriggling, tumbling, chasing, climbing, and leaping after it reminds me of childhood imagination, curiousity, exploration and discovery. Kitten's First Full Moon has a fun underlying message of encouragement to go after our dreams! Usually children love colorfully illustrated books. Kitten's First Full Moon, done in black and white with variations of gray shades, grants it to stand out in memory as being different and enables it to receive greater attention, as it is a story that occurs at night. (So black and white makes sense.) The bold, thick black lettering on starch white paper makes it easy for a child to read with confidence. The sentences are of varying length and the story is written so that it keeps children turning pages to find out what the kitten will do next. The many changes of illustrations from one on a full page, to five long ones, to a two page spread with only one small picture on each and more, adds to the visual interest of KFFM. The Caldecott Medal Winner of 2005. Enjoy it!
Soar!

Book Review: aw........
Summary: 5 Stars

A lovely picture book which would delight any small child. A white kitten is the only character, and its dilemma is simple: it wants the giant bowl of milk up in the night sky. Who can blame Kitten for wanting that? First, it tries licking the moon, then jumping on it, then climbing to it. Nothing works. But then, from its perch in a tree, Kitten notices another giant bowl of milk (actually a pond). Kitten leaps, splashes, and emerges hilariously bedraggled. Back at home, Kitten finds a real bowl of milk, and the story ends happily with it curled up asleep, a look of dreamy contentment on its little face.

The illustrations are attractive -- black and white with shades of gray, and thick outlines. The author/artist has captured the peculiar way that cats hunch forward, whiskers at attention and tail twitching. But the best picture is the one of the soaked kitten after the ill-advised pond jump. Few sights are more pathetic than a wet kitten, and no child's heart could remain unmoved at the sight of this one.

Book Review: What a Night!
Summary: 4 Stars

On the back cover of this book, the words 'What a Night!' are written inside a big white moon. Inside the book, readers can experience the very eventful night that kitten has in search of a bowl of milk. Although the illustrations are all in only black, white or gray, they are extremely interesting. The concept of how large objects can look small from far away, such as the big moon looking as small as a bowl of milk to kitten, is present in this work. The concept of reflection, as the moon is reflected into a pond is also present. Not only are these concepts highlighted, but a situation that readers can relate to is offered. Kitten is determined to reach the bowl of milk. Readers may also have things in their lives that they are determined to reach and can relate their own experience to the experience of the kitten. In light of the concepts in the illustrations and aspects of the story, this work is not only an enjoyable read, but also a meaningful one.

Book Review: Jenna's review of Kitten's First Full Moon
Summary: 5 Stars

Kitten's First Full Moon is a winner of the Caldecott Medal and it is written by Kevin Henkes. In my opinion, this book is a picture book that all children should read at bed time.I liked that Mr.Henkes made this story realistic.A kitten likes milk and a young one might think that the round full moon is a bowl of milk. Most children would wonder what the moon is really like. My only displeasure in reading this book is that the colors are scarce and the only colors are black, gray, and white. But this is made up for by the way they accompany the story. They are a perfect set of twins.Kevin Henkes is like a skillful weaver,he weaves the pictures into the words. All Caldecott winners should have books like this-Henkes is perfectly worthy of this award. I would certainly recomand this book to a friend and you.All of the positive thoughts in this review are my reason to ask you to read this book. I hope that you will also enjoy this book!
