Book Review: Not for Young Children

I like Kevin Henke's other books ( especially "A Good Day") but I cannot recommend this book. It's too painful for young children. Young children tend to identify with baby animal characters in picture books, and the kitten in this book is shown as a helpless victim. The illustrations are beautiful but they don't lessen the cruelty the kitten suffers. If you're looking for a gentle bedtime book, I'd recommend "The Tiny Patient", by Judith Pederson, or "At Night" by Jonathan Bean, instead.Book Review: Great book for young toddlers!

I was surprised that an all b&w book could repeatedly hold my son's attention, but this did. Very cute kitten on a quest for her bowl of milk. I'm not a bit fan of the repeated phrase "poor kitten!" - I don't want my son to ever feel sorry for himself. At the end of the book the phrase "lucky kitten!" didnt work for me either - getting things in the end after trials isnt about luck, but persistence, which is what the kitten had. I buy the Caldecott Medal winner for my grandchildren and grandnieces and grandnephews every Christmas. Before I purchase the current winner, my friend (a former third grade teacher) and I review it. I have always had good responses to my gift. This year I had the opportunity to read Kitten's First Full Moon many times to my granddaughter. She really enjoyed it and I did, too. I also received a thank you from my grandniece and she really liked the book, too. It's a winner.Book Review: Kitten's First Full Moon is a great Caldecott Award winner!

Kitten's First Full Moon won the Caldecott Award for 2005 and I'm glad it did! At my elementary school, we had our own Caldecott Committee and it even won that award, too! The book is a picture book with little text and mostly large pictures. There is a little kitten who mistakes the moon as a bowl of milk. It is black & white, but the kitten's expressions are so realistic! He's so cute and determined to get that bowl of milk, you want to just want to keep cheering for him!Book Review: Disappointed

I'd read good reviews about this book, but I found it very
disappointing. I didn't find the black and white particularly
advantageous to the book or the story. Dull is the word that comes
to mind for the story itself. The cover is the best part of the book--the cat is cute.
I purchased this for a gift but now I'm sorry that I relied on reviews before the purchase. If I'd seen the actual book and read the story, I would never have bought it.
