Book Reviews of L.A. Requiem (Elvis Cole Novels)Book Review: Great read Summary: 4 Stars
Elvis Cole and Joe Pike...you gotta love those guys. You don't read this series of books for the Steinbeck quality but you have to read these books. This is the 3rd in the Elvis Cole series I have read (or listened to on tape) as well as others by Mr. Crais and I am never disappointed.Elvis is sentimentally human and loyal to his friend to a fault and as emotionless as Pike is made out to seem he has a heart as big as Elvis. The links of the seemingly unrelated murders and the path we are led on through the lives of the characters and solution of the mystery provide the seamless can't put down quality of all of Robert Crais's books. I just wish some of these books would hit the big screen. I don't get into professional wrestling but when I imagine Joe Pike I can see The Rock behind those dark glasses with only the most subtle of facial movement betraying his every emotion. Give us more.
Book Review: Excellent Summary: 4 Stars
Crais and his characters Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are all in top notch form here in an excellent thriller.
Cole and Pike are the private detectives that have featured in previous novels by the author, Cole being the witty main man and Pike his lethal partner. The relationship (much of it unstated or underplayed) between the two is a joy with some whiplash one liners.
In this novel Pike's past comes back to haunt him and we learn quite a bit about his upbringing and background. The guys are hired to find a missing girl who turns up dead. When the killer is found, it seems a little too obvious to Cole and as he digs deeper he has to make some serious choices between his personal life and his loyalty to his partner. Meanwhile it looks as if Cole may have taken his revenge when the suspect is murdered himself....
This is really good stuff and highly recommended.
Book Review: Move Over Spenser and Travis McGee-Elvis Cole is on the case Summary: 5 Stars
Although this book is the eighth in a series, it is my first Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novel and I was really wowed by these characters and a great whodunit story. Elvis Cole has to be one of the best private investigators of all time--smart, cynical but with humor, a nice guy and a real person with relationships. Joe Pike, on the other hand is literally the strong silent type--a Marine-trained killing machine with lots of forensics smarts. Together they are a great team. On this case, they are asked to find the daughter of a leading Hispanic businessman in LA... Crais must love Los Angeles because Cole has an intimate knowledge and affection for the city which he shares with readers.Great characters, great setting, lots of twists, turns and subplots and probably the best PI story I have read in a number of years--this is a MUST READ for mystery fans!!
Book Review: As Good As It Gets Summary: 5 Stars
I have now read two Robert Crais novels in the Elvis Cole series. The first one, Monkey in a Raincoat and this one, the most recent. For my money, there is little to compare them. I found his first effort to be pretty thin porridge, but enjoyable. This one is a real story. A true whodunit for much of the book with many interesting subplots and characters. A book you hated to put down and looked forward to being able to get back to it. There are characters you can learn to hate and characters you root for. While the first Elvis novel was heavy on trying to be funny, this one is high grade raw meat and as serious as a heart attack. Others have detailed the book's storyline. My message is that if you are looking for one of the best books written in this genre in a long time, give it the "One Click" and get ready for some interesting reading!
Book Review: Great Elvis Cole novel (once again!) Summary: 5 Stars
'L.A. Requiem' is a wonderful hard-boiled detective novel - a real pleasure, especially since I've run across a string of sub-par books lately.
No worries with that here.
The reader does not have to have read the previous Elvis Cole novels to read and enjoy this one - in fact, you will discover more about Cole's mysterious partner, Joe Pike, in this one book than you will have read about in all of the previous books combined.
L.A. Requiem is book #8 in the Elvis Cole series and well worth the read. Rather than ruin it with lots of spoilers, let me describe it like this: lots of action, good old-fashioned detective work, flashbacks, tragedy, revenge, honor, loss and re-dedication. Very well done.
Crais is definitely on my short list of authors to watch out for!
