Book Reviews of L.A. Requiem (Elvis Cole Novels)

Book Review: An enjoyable read and a page turner of suspense
Summary: 5 Stars

If you like a book that has flashback info about things that happened before the time of this story, you'll like this book for that detail. If you do not like flashbacks interrupting the story you're reading, you won't like this book.

I enjoyed this book, which is the first by Robert Crais that I've read. Therefore, I wasn't familiar with Elvis Cole and I think Crais' readers of previous books will be happy to learn about Joe Pike through the flashbacks to know his history growing up and working at LAPD. I liked all the characters in this story regardless of their habits because the author has given each character a reason to like him/her. It was an enjoyable read and a page turner of suspense. If you've been to LA and Palm Springs area, you'll relate to the places where the action takes place.

Book Review: Interesting crime mystery thriller
Summary: 4 Stars

The murder of Karen Garcia, the daughter of a powerful Hispanic successful immigrant unleashes a whirlwind of stories unresolved in the past which begin to resurface after lying dormant for a long time. From this point Mr. Crais conceive this consistent and very neat "whodunit "crime story with LA flair which did not let go until the very end and with a rich character drawing encompassing private investigator Elvis Cole, former policeman and close friend Joe Pike and antagonist stubborn Homicide Robbery Department detective Krantz. The most attractive feature of this book is to guess who has committed all the crimes and the author ingeniously drop some elements to make you think. The big surprise, the culprit. The ending, although a little sloppy does not disappoint and stays in line with the whole story

Book Review: GOOD FOR COLE--BETTER FOR PIKE!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you have read any of these books before you know that Pike is the strong silent one. In this one we really get to see the inside of Pike and why he is like he is. Karen Garcia is killed and her father wants Pike and Cole to be in on the investigation. The police do not like this. They even hide some of the things they find out. Only one police person, Samantha Dolan, helps at all. In fact she falls for Cole. In working on this Cole finds out they have been five other murders. Do they link together? Why is police department keeping secrets? Will Cole and Pike live to fight again another day? This book will hold your attention. It shows how tough and how soft Cole can be. You will enjoy the tough silence of Pike. But when he springs you better watch out. Still wonder which is better, Pike or Hawk.

Book Review: Exciting Story with strong focus on Pike
Summary: 4 Stars

While this novel is not a "Joe Pike Novel", (that designation was given to The Watchman) this one has a lot of information on Pike and he takes center stage much of the time.

For fans of the Joe Pike character there is a lot here to enjoy about his life and background, and fans of the U.S. Marine Corps will also be pleased. Some people think this character is unrealistic, but he is revealed to be just a private person who keeps people away with a strong image and the skills to back it up.

It's a very exciting story but the plot is a bit outrageous, featuring a doppleganger and some killings held together by a slender plot thread. I would also take one star off for the idea that a person can get up and run away after taking two large-calliber, close-range gunshots!

Book Review: Review of L.A. Requiem
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the best of the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike books in Robert Crais' lexicon of books. In Requiem we get our first deep glimpse into the character of the enigmatic Pike, Elvis' partner and ex-LAPD cop. We learn of Pike's less than pleasant childhood and the truth behind how he was disgraced and driven out of the LAPD. We also get our first glimpse of a more human Pike and the true depth of feelings between Elvis and his partner. A partnership deep enough to jeopardize Elvis' bond with Lucy.

An excellent entry in Robert Crais' library of excellent fiction and a delight to everyone who loves a good story set in the beautiful dark city of Angels. L.A. Boneyard
