Book Reviews of LANA: The Memories, the Myths, the Movies

Book Review: Classy, Beautiful, Informative . . . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

Those are three words than come to mind after purchasing and reading this wonderful tribute to actress Lana Turner by her daughter, Cheryl Crane and Cindy de la Hotz. Crane, whose autobiography, "Detour: A Hollywood Story" was also brilliant, has done just as much of a compelling job with this latest effort. Cheryl stated how she wanted to show her mother as the woman she knew, the woman whose career and personal life were rich and full in many ways but how she was unable to find lasting love in the form of a husband, or how here work and busy social life caused her to be a distant but caring parent to her only child. And that Lana was a "fun lady" whose instinct for survival payed off in many ways when scandals and the like would have ruined other stars of the time. I definately got more of sense of Turner here as a person than I did in any other book, even her own autobiography, which was quite sugar-coated. Her films, her relationships with family, friends, lovers, coworkers and her entourage, her sense of style, her hobbies, her homes, virtually everything you've ever wanted to know about Lana is featured here in page after page of glorious photos, both black and white and color, as well as thoughtful and detailed paragraphs and descriptions by Cheryl. I also liked how Cheryl had a lovely romantic photo at the book's conclusion of Lana and her lost love Tyrone Power, as her "happy ending" and one hopes that somewhere Lana and Ty are dancing together somewhere in heaven.

There is much more of a personal touch here than in any other coffee table book I've read, and that makes this book even more enjoyable and inspiring. While mother and daughter had their problems and tensions with each other, they clearly loved and admired one another, and later in life were able to enjoy a much fuller and fufillled relationship than ever before. Lana and Cheryl survived tragedies and events together that probably would have destroyed people with less inner strength and perserverance. And you really do feel like you're stepping back in time, and what a glorious feeling it is. Any Lana fan or lover of classic Hollywood will love this book.

It's a shame that certain people seem to think that any time a child, relative or friend of a celebrity write a book that they only do so in order to cash in on the star or just to paint the celebrity in an negative light. I can spot those kind of agendas from a mile away and that isn't the case here. Cheryl clearly respects her mother's fans and wanted to share this intimate and beautifully done book with others. If you don't like these kinds of books and if you really believe that was the purpose for which it was written, then don't waste your time and money on it. Most people don't appreciate such narrow-minded views from individuals who obviously have nothing better to do.

In conclusion, along with "Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective" this is the best coffee table book I've ever read. Informative, detailed, entertaining and touching. I'm sure Lana would be very proud of her daughter's tribute to her. Bravo, Cheryl!

Summary of LANA: The Memories, the Myths, the Movies

Lana Turner was the ultimate personification of the term ?movie star.? The actress and world-class beauty lived the glamorous life to the hilt, and was part of one of the most notorious scandals in Hollywood history. Lana?s daughter, Cheryl Crane, now tells her mother?s story for the first time, featuring hundreds of never-before-seen photos from her private family collection.

Lana: The Memories, the Myths, the Movies will chronicle her life and 50-year career, starting with the Cinderella story of a girl discovered at a soda shop at age fifteen and made a star overnight. From blonde bombshell to box-office queen of the ?40s, Lana led a whirlwind life marked by seven marriages and a murder trial that made her and her daughter infamous.

While Lana?s private adventures inspired the press, her talent and provocative presence shone on the silver screen. Her films The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Bad and the Beautiful, and Imitation of Life are extensively covered as part of a complete filmography. And from chapters on her lovers to her makeup tips, Lana will show the complete spectrum of the woman, at work and at play. The gorgeous photographs throughout showcase not only the stunning glamour of one of Hollywood?s classic celebrities, but also reveal her other facets: as a mother, a wife, an adventurer, and above all, a woman with a zest for life.
