Book Review: Python is easy - well...

Python has the reputation to be a language that is easy to learn. Well, why do you need a book more than 500 pages to only learn the language then? The answer is that even if you can learn the basics very fast, it has a lot of bells and whistles that can take time to master.
This book covers only the language not the libraries, but covers it very well. Highly recommended reading once you'll want to use the language to write something bigger than a script of 10 lines.
4 stars only because I would have expected some exposure to the standard libraries as well for a book called "Learning Python"
Book Review: Good reference, not good for learning

If you are not a programmer by trade and are looking to learn python, wait to buy this book. It certainly provides thorough information, but it is really, really dry. Personally, I prefer a book that teaches you through exercises and examples where one lesson builds on the concepts of the last. This book does that, but to a boring degree.
I read through 80% of the book and didn't feel like I learned python because I hadn't put it into practice. I later bought the "Python Programming for the absolute beginner" book by Michael Dawson. This book gets right to the point and lets you learn by doing.

I used to say that there were several good books for learning Python. You just had to browse them and choose what works for you. Not anymore. This third edition, along with coverage of Python2.5, adds dark tabs for the exercises at the ends of most chapters, and I think that many people can now learn the language by just trying the exercises and comparing with the answers in the back. The sidebars are interesting. The tables are clear. The examples are instructive. The typesetting is well-chosen. Despite all the materials availabe free on the web, this book is worth the price.Book Review: Excellent primer on Python

Compared to other Python guides I have used this one is the best. As always, O'Reilly has produced a great guide that can be approached either as a starting manual or an in-depth technical manual and reference. Although my time devoted to it has been limited everything it has taught so far has 'sunk in' far more than some of the other guides and on-line tutorials. Overall, I definitely recommend this guide for either software developers who want a platform for creating powerful applications (hopefully free software under the GPL!) or quick scripting in GNU/Linux environments.Book Review: Great Book For Experienced Programmers in Other Languages

After getting a review copy of Learning Python, 3rd edition, I had forgot how much really great material was in the book. If you are interested in learning about Python 2.6 and Python 3000, and have some experience with Programming in another language this is an excellent book.
This book is not a reference book like the excellent Python Essential Reference, but more of a example driven guide through features of the language. I would pick this book up even if you know Python, as it covers new language features that have not been documented in some books.
