Book Reviews of Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA

Book Review: How Do We Know What is True?
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent and easy read chock full of fascinating stories that simply scare the pants off you as you learn how incredibly inept our "INTELLIGENCE" service has been.
If the book is accurate - and I have no reason to believe it isn't - it is amazing we survived.
I thoroughly enjoyed the read not knowing if it is fact or fiction. How can we mere mortal citizens know?

I tend to believe that what is written here is true and the truth is as scary as any spy thriller turned horror story could possibly be. In fact I read it twice.

Book Review: I'll sum it up quickly...
Summary: 1 Stars

If you read this book, you'll learn that every undertaking by the CIA, small and large, was an abject failure of the first degree. If the CIA had been put in charge of a sheriff's station of a small town 10 years ago, the town would be a smoldering nuclear crater today. It had me going for quite a while and I was shocked and appalled until I finally realized it was just feeding into my skepticism of the CIA and no agency is this bad. To think about the amount of time I wasted reading this crap. Congrats Mr. Weiner, you got me.

Book Review: A Wealth of information
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is extremely well-written and includes a wealth of previously unknown information. Basically it starts with the creation of the CIA and continues to the present. It provides details that pretty well shows how the leaders of the CIA operated mostly on what they believed was wanted of the CIA versus what was actually wanted. And, in many cases, the CIA operated on only what it's leaders wanted. I am completely amazed at the intricacy of operations between our Government and other countries.

Book Review: Legacy of Ashes by Tim Weiner
Summary: 5 Stars

A MUST HAVE HISTORY (especially for those born after 1963!) about the secret goings-on and crimes committed by the CIA. Understanding what the CIA and US Gov't has done in decades past gives one an clearer understanding of why other countries are angry at us and resent our "perceived" meddling in their affairs. If you want to understand why Chavez gets so much support when he verbally attacks America, and why the middle-East has become such a hot-spot of anti-western Islamic extremism, read this book.

Book Review: CIA and All Gov Institutions Successful
Summary: 4 Stars

I have the book and admittedly, I'm partway through. But I am skeptical of the book's premise -- that the CIA Superbureaucrats consider their main mission to protect the US from foreign attack by anticipating harm or undermining it. That is a tertiary or, at best, secondary mission. The primary mission of all government agencies is to funnel taxpayer money to contractors, so that a cabal of CEO Robber Barons reap huge profits. In this all our government institutions are highly successful.
