Book Reviews of Light on Yoga: Yoga DipikaBook Review: informative and essential Summary: 5 Stars
After practicing yoga for a few years, I finally got around to reading about yoga. I took the advice of a few Amazon reviewers and purchased this book. Great (inspiring) pictures with concise/precise descriptions for each pose. Most helpful to me are the "Effects" sections; I am needing exercises to help with lower back, abdominal strengthening and to quiet sciatica problems. I am a cautious yoga student, and so I always ask yoga instructors for modifications so that I can lead up to some of the poses that seem a bit out of my range. All poses in the book are ranked in difficulty (explained in the intro somewhere), another great aspect of this purchase.
Book Review: beginners need not apply Summary: 3 Stars
I was looking for an introduction to yoga, when I read the reviews and this was called the "bible" of yoga, I thought there would be some easy exercises with a natural progression to more difficult ones. Every exercise in this book is for double-jointed superhumans who can defy gravity and the laws of physics with thier bodies and also leap tall buildings in a single bound. Interesting to look at, but I was looking forward to starting yoga practice, and all I have is a book with pictures of human beings contorted like pretzels. If you have money to throw around, buy it. If you are like the rest of us mortals with limited cash and flexibility, move on.
Book Review: Excellent. Summary: 5 Stars
Still the definitive book to read and own, on asanas. You will rarely see anyone perform any asanas that are not included (and superbly demonstrated)in this book.Together with Iyengar's two other books, "Light On Pranayama" and "Light On The Yoga Sutras Of Patanajali", "Light On Yoga" completes this guru's effort to bring Yoga into the open. However Iyengar's teachings ,concerning the detailed instruction and performance of the asanas, have changed a lot through time and people should not attempt to use this book exclusively to learn at home.
Book Review: The modern bible of hatha yoga Summary: 5 Stars
I keep this book near me whenever I'm doing my yoga practice. Mr. Iyengar's deep insight into the fundamental structure of each asana provides the best foundation possible for deepening one's personal practice. Also very useful is discussion of the therapeutic benefits of many of the asanas, including series of asanas that can be used to to address a number of ailments. This book is not a replacement for a qualified yoga teacher. However, the level of understanding of hatha yoga this book provides make it indepsensible. This is a great spiritual book for the modern age.
Book Review: Classic and for good reason Summary: 5 Stars
This is the basic text for understanding yoga, particularly if you follow Iyengar style. It describes how to get into and out of each pose, provides photo "plates"...old timey ones with Iyengar himself, has numerous appendices including a suggested schedule for incorporating various poses from beginner to advanced. Includes background on yoga...its a wonderful reference for me as a beginner. Only drawback is that it doesn't seem to include too many variations for beginners (use of props et cetera, which is weird given that Iyengar is really known for its use of props.
