Book Review: Too Late

I stumbled across this LITTLE LADY series perhaps too late, at book three rather than book one of this series.
And, probably more significantly, author Hester Browne is late entering the chick-lit pool, British division. She is competing with the well-established franchises of SHOPAHOLIC and BRIDGET JONES--not to mention dozens of other similar novels set on both sides of "The Pond."
It takes a bit of courage, then, even to attempt to compete; to be fair, Browne does a good job at entering the fray.
Browne has a clear vision of her heroine, a fully formed story, and some fascinating supporting characters. This novel proves weak, however, in the utter banality of the heroine's love interest, as well as Browne's superficial attempts to convey life on Manhattan's fast tracks. Other than cupcakes and muffins, there's not much weight to it, no pun intended. Not enough is made of the supporting characters, either.
There is a silly joke about the mile-high club that isn't actually funny for those who understand the reference, and isn't explained for those who don't. The subplots as to what illegal activity the father is conjuring or why a sister is pathelogically nasty also end up unresolved.
Were it not for other Amazon reader-reviews praising the earlier books in this series, I would not bother to backtrack. Still, Hester Browne has created a heroine intriguing and endearing enough that I will read the original books.
As for her future books in the series, she already tantalizes with foreshadowing. THE LITTLE LADY AGENCY IN THE BIG APPLE has two other males who would make preferable love interests to the one in this story. It will be interesting to see which way the author takes this series. And maybe she will explain then how a dog got from the States to England without needing to go through quarantine.
