Book Reviews of Lonely Planet Hawaii: The Big Island (Regional Travel Guide)Book Review: Great photography, but a bit light on information Summary: 3 Stars

This book has beautiful pictures throughout. The reviews and amount of helpful information leave a bit to be desired though.
I am used to guide books rating lots of different options for each category. This book seems to pick one (or at most a few) of any given activity (i.e. snorkeling trips, horseback rides, etc.). They reference their website where there may be much more information. I don't like this format. I want a book that I can take with me so I do not look at a computer while I am on vacation.
The book has a lot of eco type excursions in comparison to other guides which is a plus if you are looking for that type of information.
This guide is not geared toward a "family vacation" so if that is what you are after - look elsewhere.
Book Review: Lots of info packed into a tiny book... Summary: 5 Stars

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I found it to be useful, compact and stylish. Plenty of pictures to accompany descriptions, plenty of information about attractions, activities, dining options, etc. While it's not "comprehensive" (it doesn't list every restaurant in every city) it seems to try for the "best-of-breed" options for various activities and dining options.
There's certainly plenty to see, do and eat for those planning trips to Hawaii for business and pleasure. This book covers the big island.
I'd generally recommend it. If you're looking for something exhaustive, however, this isn't it. There's too much going on in Hawaii to be THAT thorough.

I can't review this product on accuracy, but I can say that the pictures are beautiful, the information relevant and the layout attractive with many charts and maps. I especially liked the cultural and historical elements of the guidebook. This is not just for the "surfer dudes" who go to Hawaii but also for those who prefer a more "authentic" taste of the island. The authors of this guidebook aren't afraid to say "This place is too touristy", which I appreciate.
For me, the one downer about this book is that it's quite small (a good thing), but the print is small too (a bad thing). I guess portability is more important than reading comfort.
Book Review: It's a great little book packed with useful information! Summary: 5 Stars

I have the Lonely Planet for Maui and getting ready to go to the big island, so I thought I'd pickup this book. Both books are new 3rd editions published in 2008 and for the first time in full color. It's a great little "stow in your carry-on" book with lots of helpful maps, photos, and information on sights, activities, eating, and sleeping broken-down by areas of the island. It has pretty good info on bodysurfing and yoga, two of my favorite activities along with hiking and snorkeling. This is the only book you need to take with you and other than that bring your desire to explore and appreciate the beauty of the big island, Hawaii.
Book Review: Bright and interesting Summary: 5 Stars

A winning product from Lonely Planet. Plenty of pictures. (Unlike most LP guides that put all the pictures at the beginning, this one has pictures throughout.) And much useful info on accomodations, dining, sights, transport, etc.... all the information you'd expect from a travel guide. Plus some extras like "Island voices" (interviews with local residents)itineraries (both island-wide and local -- i.e. "Two days in Hilo") and a chapter on history and culture.
Whether you're planning a trip to Hawai'i or just wishing you could go, you'll enjoy this one.
