Book Review: good book in its way, but beware: format change

Remember the old Lonely Planet guides with small print and simple layout that were crammed with information for independent travelers? That format appears to be gone, at least in this book. Though excellent in its way, it now resembles a more mainstream travel guide, with a fancier layout, more cultural tidbits, and not as much practical information. I had wanted a book that would give a good rundown on a variety of accomodations available in Luberon villages, listed under the village. The villages are there, but no accomodation listings--just restaurants and sights to see. I couldn't believe it! I finally found all accomodation information in a single chapter at the back of the book--22 pages for the entire Provence and Cote d'Azur region, with about a dozen listings for the Luberon area. The bias was toward trendy, relatively expensive places. There was little information on inexpensive options. Perhaps the increasing availability of internet information is driving this change. Perhaps all the budget travelers have grown up and now have money. Perhaps the change is OK. But what I received was not what I expected from a Lonely Planet guide and was pretty much useless for my purposes. I ended up returning the book and getting the older 2005 edition from my local library. The change in emphasis appears to have happened with the 2007 edition. Both have this subtitle on the cover: "Inspirational ideas & detailed coverage for foodies, walkers, and culture-lovers."
