Book Review: Well-produced but needs more content, irritatingly politicized

Lonely Planet books are usually fun and useful. They tend to be youthful and adventurous in outlook, it's the charm of the series. But this particular guide is burdened with political overtones due to the overly partisan manner of the author, who appears to be one of those tedious, president-bashing American types.
For example, attached to the nice story on the renowned Lombard "Most Crooked" Street is the non-sequitur, "...and you thought the Bush administration was crooked..." If ugly parochialism merits as much attention as the ABCs of getting around this beautiful city, surely it would be best to read it up elsewhere within context. Now we all know San Francisco attracts the type of strident people who prefer being fashionably "lefty" and on many issues. No problem with that, and perhaps it was meant to reflect "homage" to the city's liberal culture. But sly indoctrination-by-travel makes for uninteresting study and even less interesting travel advice.
Too bad the content is so politicized, because otherwise the book's design is nicely done, the writing style is easy to read and facts are easily looked up. It could have been more comprehensive, i.e. among other things it missed Cybelle's pizza-and-beer at Nob Hill and some of the well-located value hotels nearby. Maps could have been more plentiful, and larger, and more in full color too (I usually find guidebooks lacking in their map sections). Travel information appears to be mostly accurate and current as of mid-2008. Importantly, news about the new California Academy of Science museum brings attention to its impressive exhibits and concept. The book gets its stars for providing such useful tidbits despite its off-putting tone.
