Book Reviews of Lonely Planet The Travel Book MiniBook Review: A beautiful blitz of a not-so-lonely planet! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very fun book! You may use it as a travel book, but only if you think you have already been everywhere worth going. You'll find there are many more possibilities. You may use it as a means to circle the globe, sampling each "country" as you fly by. When you finish, you may use it to cover the remaining corner of a coffee table to the delight of your guests.
The friendly people at "Lonely Planet" first strained their imaginations to find every country and quasi-country they might include. In a most egalitarian way, they then gave each of their 231 geo-political entities exactly the same space - four small pages dominated by stunning and diverse color photos. The text, however, packs the basic information you need to decide if you want to learn more about a potential new destination. For everything from micro-countries to vast empires, you are given best places to visit or experience; emblematic books, movies, and music; a bit on local food and drink; the basic local greeting; the most notable and surprising features; a small map; and the basic demographics. But it is the photos that make the book: candid, real, well-framed, almost like being there!
In an age of geographic ignorance, this volume is a wonderful aid to enhancing global understanding for inquiring minds of all ages. Because each "chapter" is a short, quick read, it is easy to put down - temporarily. Once you begin with Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Andorra, ... you will want to press on to Macau, Macedonia, Madagascar, ... until you finally traverse Wales, Yemen, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Just when you think you're back home, however, you find squibs on a few more surprising places: Ascension, Diego Garcia, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Niue, Saint Helena, Saint Pierre & Miquelon, South Georgia, Svalbard, Tokelau, Tristan da Cunhe, and Wallis & Futuna.
So many places, so little time. Where will you begin? Hope you enjoy this volume as much as we did!
