Book Reviews of Looking for God: Seeing the Whole in One

Book Review: Reminding Truth to the Void who forgot its Wholeness
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a magical presentation of the 'Whole Truth of the Void'. This is a gentle meditation, not a mere reading. This gives a vision on how "YOU" and "Others" which constitutes the 'Many-ness' can know its OWN 'One-ness' in/with the Void. The author says that all that can be done is just to sit quiet. The Truth will set "YOU" free. The well stringed thoughts and quotes on "polarities", the "play", and "awakening" will push one to know the Truth or "be" the Truth if one is already "searching"; If not this is a great beginning in one's life.

The Truth is very simple. The practical dimension of Truth in day-to-day life is what is needed. The method of conveying itself has made the message complicated. Also, the mind can not get it. So, whatever is/be said, if one tries to understand by mind, there is no hope of understanding the import of the message. But, still we have no alternate mechanism, and we have to use only words and mind. In such a critical situation how to convey this message in as simple words and as few words as possible. This is a challenge. Chuck Hillig does a wonderful job here.

Here are some gems from the book.

Page 11

Well, the saying "something-about-something" approach reinforces and validates our normal everyday consciousness: i.e that there's an actual Observer (the Subject) who's making a direct observation about something "out there" that's actually being Observed (the Object).

Page 13

When Consciousness, in a sense, pretends to become "self-conscious," then it appears to assume only a singular ... and apparently personified ... point-of-view. In taking on a role as a now identified "Observer," Consciousness spontaneously creates a manifested world that it then begins to experience as some kind of disowned "other" ... that is, as "the Observed."

What arises in that instant is the wonderfully wacky world of duality. It's still only "One," of course, but now "It" is pretending to be "two".

Page 14

Consequently, without your ongoing presence (however illusory) as the apparent "Observer-of-the-Drama," there exists only the pure consciousness of "what is." Infact, your awareness of (and beliefs about) your own direct field of experience actually appears to make your personalized universe show up for you as it does.

Page 15

But, in Truth, there really aren't any "right places" or "wrong places." Chuang Tzu once said, "The pivot of Tao passes through the center where all affirmations and denials converge." In fact, it's your very belief that God can only be found outside of your own immediate experience that sets your entire spiritual quest into motion.

Page 25

So could it be possible that you're actually the (w)hole empty vastness that ALL of life itself shows up in?

Page 40

Is it possible that "who you really are" might look like everything else that's already in the (w)hole? Could everything you see be only a reflection of YOU?

Page 41

Could it be that may be it's only your own reflection in the (w)hole that's doing all of the changing that you experience?

Not "you." Your reflection.

Page 43

Again, is it possible that you're only the empty space in which absolutely everything in the universe is showing up?

Page 46

Stop your franatic searching and, instead, sit quietly in the middle of your own helplessness. Wait patiently ... and without any expectations. Wait quietly in the midst of your own emptiness. Let go of "letting go." and stop. Just STOP! The (w)hole Truth will set you free.

Page 51

You will desire and consume whatever you think is NOT you until you finally realize that you can NEVER be fully satisfied and at peace with anything that is subject to the laws of CHANGE.

...

Do you see the problem? "Who" exactly is doing all of this desiring, and "who" is the one who's going to be giving it up, anyway?

Learn to tolerate the futility of your own questioning and trust in the timing of your own unfoldment. Shakespeare said, "Ripeness is all."

Page 73

"To arrive at being everything, desire to be nothing." St. John of the Cross

Page 97

LIVING AS THE VOID requires that you give up all hope of ever existing outside of this single moment now. But, don't wory; the so-called "future" won't be destroyed. You just have to destroy the idea that there is going to be a "future YOU" that is, somehow, going to "be there" when this "future" supposedly shows up.

...

Consequently, you can't possibly exist in any "future" simply because you're NEVER going to be living there. Since your only reality is found in the present "NOW," it follows that THIS very moment is the only place where you can ever actually show up in and, in fact, ever even exist at all.

The same thing is true about the past. You have NO reality in the past because you're just not able to live back there either. Since this present moment sources BOTH the past and the future, they both can ONLY be remembered (or imagined) from the same place: "here and now."

THIS very moment, truly, is IT.

Page 98

Your fear and anxiety are created whenever you act as if there are other realities that are, somehow, more real than this one is right now.

When you allow your mind to dwell on the painful past or to scare yourself about the unknown future, you're moving your attention into areas where you have absolutely NO real power to affect anything whatsoever.

The ONE place where you have any real power at all is always (and ONLY) in THIS present moment of "NOW." Your entire life is unfolding from THIS precious instant because you can only live on the very crosshairs of "here" and "now."

Page 104

When you surrender to the Void, you'll have to give up all hope of ever being able to survive as a separate "you."

Page 107

But the problem is NOT with your story, no matter how far out it might be. The real problem is only with your ATTACHMENT to your story. It's your belief that all of the dramas that appear on the path of your life are actually happening to a "someone" called "you". And here's is why that's such a big deal: this so-called "you" isn't REALLY here! Why not? BECAUSE ONLY THE VOID IS HERE!

Page 114

"Enlightenment" is only the realization that there never really was any "Gateway to Enlightenment" to begin with; nor was there ever any separate person (like an individual "you") that was really present at all who could be walking through it.

Page 118

The Void becomes both the source of all "nothing-ness" and, at the very same time, the source of all "everything-ness." It's the limitless context in which the entire universe appears ... and DISAPPEARS.

Summary of Looking for God: Seeing the Whole in One

This extradordinary book has a one-inch hole drilled through the exact center of each of the 136 pages. The Author uses the spatial emptiness of the void to share a profound and universal Truth that can, in fact, only be discovered within. By pointing to the empty hole on each of the pages, the Author is also pointing to the empty void in the center of you, too.

This book is a unique journey into the (w)holeness that lies at the core of Being, itself. Look inside...and touch the Void.
